What a great way to kick off summer!

Thank you to all the kids and families who came out for our annual kickball game yesterday. We had a great crowd, plenty of laughs, hot dogs, snow cones, and some friendly competition between Law Enforcement and Fire/EMS.

We came up a little short on the scoreboard this year, so congratulations to Fire/EMS on the win. We’ll be looking for a rematch next summer. 😜

One of the best parts of the day was getting to spend time with the kids in our community and see them out on the field playing alongside first responders. Events like this are a great reminder that some of the best community relationships are built simply by spending time together and having fun.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a great event. We had a blast and hope you did too!

If you’re gonna hide, don’t hide in DeSoto.

Donald Carl Woods of Arcadia, FL was sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and firearm charges, including possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The case began when DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (FL) Narcotics Detectives arrested Woods on an active warrant out of Georgia on April 28, 2025. During the arrest, deputies found methamphetamine and a firearm on his person. Woods, an 8 time convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law. The investigation was a joint effort involving the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, DEA, and ATF.

This case is an example of the outstanding work by DeSoto County Detectives, our federal law enforcement partners, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Simon Eth. Their efforts helped remove dangerous drugs and an illegally possessed firearm from our community while ensuring a repeat offender was held accountable.

𝐙𝐄𝐑𝐎 𝐓𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐃𝐑𝐔𝐆 𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐎!

Yesterday, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit obtained two arrest warrants for Shakamansa Gilchrist for the Sale of a Controlled Substance Within 1,000 Feet of a Park.

Our Narcotics Unit also developed probable cause to obtain a search warrant for a residence at 614 SW Spring Avenue. The residence was being used to facilitate the sale of illegal narcotics, which is a public nuisance according to Florida Law.

After the search warrant was granted, our Narcotics Detectives executed the warrant and seized 4.65 grams of crack co***ne, 8.86 grams of ma*****na, drug paraphernalia, and $524 in cash.

During the investigation, it was determined that the co***ne, ma*****na, and drug paraphernalia belonged solely to Gilchrist.

Gilchrist, a convicted felon, was arrested and charged with:

• Maintaining a Place Where Controlled Substances Are Illegally Kept, Sold, or Used (Public Nuisance) [FELONY]
• Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack Co***ne) [FELONY]
• Sale of a Controlled Substance Within 1,000 Feet of a Park [FELONY] – 2 Warrants (Fun fact: This carries a minimum mandatory 3 year prison sentence!)
• Possession of Ma*****na Under 20 Grams
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to removing dangerous illegal drugs from our streets. Those who choose to sell narcotics in our community will be ARRESTED. Sheriff Potter commends our Narcotics Detectives for their hard work and dedication to keeping DeSoto County safe.
