In commemoration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we salute Francis F. T. Ching whose leadership and research helped to establish the LAArboretum as a unique horticultural resource. Not only did he guide the Arboretum’s formative growth of plant introduction, he advanced major research programs that resonate today. He led the Fire Retardant Plant Project, the first major study of its kind in 1958 to investigate and test plants for their fire retardant properties. Wildfires of the late 1950s and early 1960s, including the Bel Air Fire of 1961, ravaged the area. The Arboretum distributed 200,000 pamphlets with plant recommendations to local residents.

Ching, a native of Hawaii, rose through the ranks to become director in 1970. Over the course of his distinguished career, he earned national recognition and many awards, including the prestigious Arthur Hoyt Scott Garden and Horticulture Award from Pennsylvania’s Swarthmore College. Ching was named an honorary life member of the American Association of Botanic Gardens and Arboreta, now known as the American Public Gardens Association. He retired in 1990 and died in 2012 at the age of 82.

Chow time for peachicks. Watch them following their mother and learning how to scratch and forage for food. A healthy diet for peafowl is critically important. Peafowl are omnivores with a diet composed mostly of seeds, plants, insects, small reptiles, and mammals. The Arboretum provides the peacocks, peahens and peachicks a similar environment to their native habitat in India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan where peafowl are found in open forests and wooded areas.
