Of the many floral tributes to Dolly Parton, we'd like to highlight a striking hybrid tea rose that is a namesake of the country music icon. The Rosa 'Dolly Parton' is a flamboyant, eye-catching, and colorful reflection of the late singer, composer, and actor. The color of the fragrant hybrid tea rose ranges from orange-red to coppery-red. The flowers bloom to width of 5 to 6 inches. Amateur breeder Joseph E. Winchell crossed 'Fragrant Cloud' and 'Oklahoma', resulting in the Dolly Parton rose in 1984.

Another Dolly flower note: Her "Wildflowers" song was a breakout hit from the 1987 Trio album with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt.

Our Victoria waterlily pads aren't quite big or hefty enough for entry into the ongoing Waterlily Weigh-Off. Still our plants are ready for their closeups and their flowers are lovely.

The Waterlily Weigh-Off takes place across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. The annual event, started by Denver Botanic Gardens in 2023, challenges public gardens and zoos across the globe to a bit of friendly competition to see whose Victoria waterlily can carry the most weight. This year’s competition began August 17. The heavyweight champion of waterlilies will be announced on August 28.

Enjoy this Santa Cruz water lily (Victoria cruziana) in one of the pools in the Aquatic Garden on Tallac Knoll. See the bud to the right of the white flower? Look for the Amazon water lily (Victoria amazonica) in the other pool. It is likely to bloom soon.

Seeds for these plants came from Ganna Walska Lotusland in Montecito, which shared them with the Huntington Botanical Garden in early 2024. The Arboretum received two seedlings from Huntington that were transplanted from 5 gallon pots to the pools in the Aquatic Garden. The water lily bloomed at the Arboretum for the first time in August 2024.

Mating season for peafowl is ending and the peacocks are losing their trains of long iridescent feathers that they spread in a fan-like display to attract peahens. But sometimes it's just hard to let go. This peacock is holding on dearly to its long feather!
