We manage fuels year-around on the Angeles National Forest to reduce the potential of devastating wildfire impacts. Constructing and maintaining fuelbreaks is one component of the hazardous fuels program on the forest.

The term “fuelbreaks” often refers to a strip of land in a strategic area such as a ridge top. The fuelbreak concept and fuel modification practices have been developed extensively since the 1950's and is integral to land-use and fire suppression planning.

Fuel modification practices include clearing of original brush by hand, mechanical or prescribed burning, depending on the specific project.

The Front Country Fuelbreak Project is a series of 18 fuelbreaks along the foothills north of Interstate 210. This project aims to have vegetation treated to enhance community protection, reduce the risk of loss of human life, structures, natural resources from wildland fire and potential flooding. Fuelbreaks also give firefighters improved opportunities for tactical operations and safety.

The photos highlight the work on the Sunset fuelbreak that is currently in progress. The work underway is in partnership with the Rivers & Mountains Conservancy. The Photo on the left is before treatment, and the photo on the right is post-treatment.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of wildland firefighter Leslie R. Washington, 41, of Noorvik, Alaska, who died Tuesday following a medical emergency while responding to the Bear Trap Fire along the Minnesota-Canada border.

Washington was a firefighter with Scorched Earth Services assigned to the company’s K-River 2 contract crew, which was supporting federal wildfire response on the Bear Trap Fire.

Our thoughts are with Washington’s family, loved ones, friends and crewmates, and with the entire wildland fire community mourning this loss.

Angeles’ Fox Field launched USFS FireWatch 51 to the 2000-acre Timber Fire for a mapping and fire intel mission. Once completed, “51” will conduct a Lightning Fire Detection Mission over the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. While forecasts have indicated the potential for lightning on the Angeles, none has been detected.

In coordination with local units, using lightning data and observations, the detection flights can be requested. The flights continue will continue for several days after a lightning storm because lightning can ignite “sleeper” wildfires that go undetected for several days. These “sleeper” fires may occur in higher terrain areas with heavier fuels consisting of thick conifer trees and timber forests or wilderness areas, making them difficult to identify and reach.

Using the satellite lightning detection data, fire officials plan the mission and then use the technology aboard the aircraft to locate confirmed fires. FireWatch51 sends real-time video and mapping products to the local units. The local agencies then can respond to any fires the flight has detected.

USFS’s FireWatch51 utilizes a Beechcraft B200 Super King aircraft that cruises over 300mph. “51” was the first in the nation to use the technology day or night on a regular basis and has been based in Lancaster, California.
