This Saturday at Blush and Bashful Flower Co, starting at 8AM our community is coming together for one of our own. 💙 ((this is my son-in-law‘s parents))

If you know Myron and Lucinda, you know they are the kind of people who would give you the shirt off their backs. They would be the first ones to jump in and help someone else facing a difficult season like this, without a second thought. They have given so much to others, and now it’s our turn to rally around this selfless family and help carry them through this season. ❤️

Friday morning, Myron suffered a stroke that affected mostly his cerebellum and a small portion of his spinal cord. We are incredibly thankful that his doctors believe he can make a full recovery — but that recovery will take time, lots of therapy, and unfortunately, time away from his small business.

As fellow small business owners, we know just how difficult that can be. So several of us are joining together to help take a little of the financial burden off Myron and Lucinda while they focus on what matters most: healing and recovery.

Arcadia Once Had Public Transportation. It Was Powered by a Mule.

Here’s one I had never heard until I started digging into some of the stranger businesses from early DeSoto County.

In 1889, Arcadia had its own streetcar.

And no, it wasn’t electric.

It was pulled by a mule.

Historical records say the Arcadia Street Car Company operated a single car that carried passengers between an area known as C**n Prairie and the Peace River. At the time, the river was still an important transportation route, so having a way to move people back and forth actually made a lot of sense.

The best part is we don't have to imagine what it looked like.

The photograph with this post is the real thing.

Florida Memory identifies it as “Billy Bowlegs III and the street railway of Arcadia” and dates it to around 1889. Bowlegs is shown holding the reins of the mule that powered the streetcar.

If you look closely at the side of the car, you can even make out the words “Arcadia Street Railway & Improvement Co.”

So yes, more than 130 years ago, Arcadia had public transportation.

The engine just needed hay instead of gasoline.

It’s another one of those little pieces of DeSoto County history that makes you realize how much of the place that once existed has completely disappeared.

Secretary Byrd Designates Arcadia Main Street (AMS) as Florida Main Street Program of the Month! Since 1985, AMS has generated $7,828,034 in public and private investments. The district has seen an increase of 48 net new businesses that have created 193 net new jobs, and over 12,811 volunteer hours have been recorded.
AMS was recently awarded an AARP Community Challenge grant and an America250FL grant which they used to helped to make navigating downtown easier with wayfinding signs and beautification projects including three new murals, painted flowerpots, and landscaping.

Congratulations Arcadia Main Street!

Today, Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced that Arcadia Main Street, located in DeSoto County, has been designated the August 2026 Florida Main Street Program of the Month.

“The success of the Arcadia Main Street program reflects the value of community driven revitalization,” said Secretary of State Cord Byrd. “Through dedicated leadership, strong partnerships, and preserving their historic character, Arcadia has fostered a unique sense of place and a vibrant downtown district. The community’s dedication to patriotism continues to foster foundational freedoms and opportunity throughout the state.”
