The City of Arcata invites the community to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of Phase One of the Arcata Wastewater Treatment Facilities Improvements Project on Wednesday, June 10.

This project, which originally broke ground in December of 2022, aims to improve and modernize Arcata’s world-renowned water treatment plant. Amongst other projects, improvements include the replacement of a chlorine gas disinfection system with a far more environmentally friendly ultraviolet system, major upgrades to electrical systems for digital control and underground piping and a complete renovation of the primary treatment headworks and clarifier.

The ribbon cutting ceremony, acknowledging the past three plus years of work by City staff, consultants and Wahlund Construction, will take place on Wednesday, June 10 at 4 p.m. meeting at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 600 South G Street.

For more information on this event or this project, please visit the City’s current construction webpage or call (707) 825-2128.

By keeping food scraps and other organic materials out of landfills through composting, residents and businesses can help fight climate change, conserve natural resources and build a healthier, more resilient community.

Composting helps the environment by keeping organic waste out of landfills where it emits methane, a powerful, climate-warming green house gas (GHG). It also helps build stronger soils that reduce run off and produce more crops in your garden.

In 2016, California passed Senate Bill 1383 to reduce organic waste sent to landfills statewide. As part of these requirements, curbside organic waste collection through current solid waste haulers is expected to begin in Arcata in late fall 2026. More information will be provided to residents and businesses before the program begins.

• Keep learning about compost. Visit the Arcata Library or explore online resources, such as The Local Composting Toolkit from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance or kid-friendly lessons at Let’s Go Compost.
• Start composting at home. Check out the “Backyard Composting Made Easy” brochure for tips.
• Support local community composting and green waste programs.
o Services such as Full Cycle Compost and Local Worm Guy offer subscription composting options with pick-up and drop-off services.
o Residents can also self-haul green waste to Wes Green, located at 1500 Glendale Dr. For additional information on Wes Green’s services, call (707) 822-8537.
o Learn more about composting and green waste resources at cityofarcata.org/294/Composting-Green-Waste-Resources.
• Get involved in the community. Visit the farmers market to connect with local growers and learn about sustainable farming practices. Volunteer at a community garden or composting workshop. Share composting knowledge and encourage friends, family and neighbors to participate.

The City of Arcata, in collaboration with Q***r Humboldt, invites the community to a flag raising ceremony celebrating Pride Month at City Hall on Thursday, June 4.

Pride Month is acknowledged internationally as a month-long celebration to recognize the contributions of the Two Spirit, Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Q***r, Intersex, Asexual, + (2S/LGBTQIA+) community. Its origin traces back to the Stonewall riots in 1969, which ignited the first pride marches and a rapid increase in 2S/LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups across the United States. For several years, the City of Arcata has officially recognized Pride Month and held a flag raising ceremony to commemorate the occasion.

This June, the City will raise the Two-Spirit and Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride Flag during the month of June. This flag was chosen because it honors the diversity that exists within the q***r community.

The City Council will receive a proposed proclamation to acknowledge Pride Month at the meeting on Wednesday, June 3. The flag raising ceremony will then take place at Arcata City Hall, 736 F St, on Thursday, June 4 at noon. The public is invited to attend this ceremony and join the City in recognizing Pride Month.

🚲 The City of Arcata’s Bike Rodeo pedals back into town on Saturday, May 30 and the City encourages community members to attend as participants and as volunteers!

Bike Rodeos are communal events that help kids practice bicycle transportation safety. Reconnect Arcata is a visionary project to heal community divides and build better connected neighborhoods. The project aims to ensure safe connectivity across neighborhoods currently divided by highways like U.S. 101, SR 299, SR 255 and legacy railroad corridors. Focused on three key subareas, Valley West, Arcata Central and the Gateway Area, the project proposes possible new and improved pedestrian and bicycle crossings, rails to trails, a freeway lid linking Downtown Arcata to Cal Poly Humboldt and redesigned Gateway interchanges to improve multimodal access for all residents.

The project centers on equity, prioritizing areas that rely most on walking, biking and transit to reach day-to-day needs. Through community engagement, urban design and transportation planning, Reconnect Arcata aims to transform inherited infrastructure barriers into corridors of connection to build stronger neighborhoods.

The City of Arcata and SmithGroup invite members of the public and all interested parties to a series of events exploring current and future opportunities for non-motorized transportation to reconnect neighborhoods in Arcata currently separated by highways. These events are meant to gather information and public priorities for the project. Please join the Reconnect Arcata project team members from the City Engineering department, the Community Partnership Group and SmithGroup at the following community meetings:
• Walking tour on Thurs. May 28 at 4 p.m. starting at Valley West Park, 1243 Hallen Ct, Arcata
• A walking tour, 3 to 4 p.m., and Open House, 4 to 6 p.m., on Fri. May 29 at the D Street Neighborhood Center, 1301 D St., Arcata
• Arcata Farmers Market on Sat. May 30 from 10 a.m. to noon

For more information, please visit cityofarcata.org or contact the Building and Engineering Department at (707) 825-2128.

Site cleanup is set to begin on the area affected by the Downtown Fire.

The demolition and removal of fire debris near the corner of 10th and H Street can now proceed following the recent release of the site to the property owners by insurance companies. This milestone allows cleanup and recovery activities to move into the next phase.

The City has been working closely with the property owners to identify a qualified contractor to complete the site cleanup and to help streamline the permitting process with the various regulatory agencies involved in the project.

The cleanup effort is particularly complex because the damaged structures and debris crossed multiple property lines during the fire event. As a result, all affected properties must be cleaned and managed together as a single coordinated project. The City appreciates the cooperation and diligence of the property owners who have worked collaboratively to move the project forward and complete the cleanup effort as one unified project. For a project such as this, it is typical to take approximately four weeks for the contractor to mobilize and approximately four weeks to complete the work depending on specific site conditions.

The City will share the project timeline with the public when it is available, so that community will know when the work will begin and when the project is expected to be completed.

Cleanup operations will involve the removal of fire-damaged materials and debris from the site and loading it on to trucks for disposal out of the area. When construction begins, community members should expect intermittent traffic disruptions in the downtown area during the work to accommodate truck loading, hauling activities and construction equipment operations. Traffic control measures will be implemented to help maintain public safety and minimize impacts whenever possible.

The City appreciates the patience and cooperation of the community, property owners and partner agencies as this work moves forward. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available. For immediate questions, please contact the City Manager’s Office at (707) 822-5953.

As the Annie & Mary Trail advances towards the Mad River, the City of Arcata would like to remind folks to follow all construction related signs and traffic control to ensure safety for both trail users and workers!

Upcoming construction will include the connection to Valley West from the trail, installation of bridges, and construction of the northern segment of trail that is parallel to the Mad River.

The City has worked in partnership with Great Redwood Trail Agency, Caltrans District 1, Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District (HBMWD), the County of Humboldt, Cal Poly Humboldt and resource agencies to develop the Arcata Annie & Mary Trail. Construction of the trail is being done by Granite Construction and started in September of 2025 beginning with the Southern section from Sunset Ave that is now paved up to the Aldergrove Road area. The trail project is expected to be completed by this summer!

If you would like to learn more about the project, please view the related webpage, cityofarcata.org/831/Annie-Mary-Trail-Connectivity-Project.
