November 19, 1942, the Minnesota based 175th Field Artillery (FA) fired the first American rounds against the Germans in WWII. The 175th FA was one of three Direct Support Artillery Battalion’s from Minnesota that were part of the 34th Red Bull Division Artillery (DIVARTY). During the initial stages of Operation Torch in North Africa, the 34th DIVARTY’s 175th FA was task organized to the British 11th Infantry Group in an attempt to push further West into Tunisia. The Allies were attempting to capture as much infrastructure as possible in Tunisa in their push West. German paratroopers were inserted into Tunisia to stop the Allied advance and both forces paused outside the French held town of Medjez-El-Bab. It was unclear if the French Vichy troops would side with the Allies or the Germans at this early part of the operation. The Germans gave the French forces an ultimatum to surrender the city or hostilities would commence at 0700 on 19NOV. The Germans subsequently assaulted and the 175th FA fired in support of the French horse mounted cavalry defending the town. The French troops withdrew from the town only after exhausting all of their ammuniton under cover of the 175th FA. On November 22nd the French Army of Africa joined the Allies. The German delay by the French forces supported by the 175th FA allowed the deployment of additonal British troops and Medjez-El-Bab was retaken by the Allies on November 25th. The shell casing from the first round fired by the 175th Artillery is on display at the Camp Ripley Military Museum.

We are grateful for the opportunity to have hosted a second symposium at the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division headquarters.

The event was a success once again and allowed us the opportunity to field some very necessary discussions as we move towards the Army of 2030 vision.

Read the full story of the event here: https://ngmnpublic.azurewebsites.us/u-s-army-artillery-intelligence-communities-meet-to-prepare-for-the-army-of-2030-changes/

Sixty percent of artillery, or 'fires', units in the Army are in the National Guard, which creates a unique set of challenges when it comes to things like fielding equipment, resourcing the units, and conducting training at the individual, unit, and collective levels. From Sept. 7-8 2023, 34th Red Bull Infantry Division headquarters hosted Army personnel from the fires and intelligence communities, from across the active duty and National Guard components alike, for a second-annual symposium to address some of these issues.

In keeping with the U.S. Army’s strategic vision for the future, known as the ‘Army of 2030’ which is driving the implementation of significant force structure changes, the leadership of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division and 34th Infantry Division Artillery - Divarty constructed an itinerary which emphasized the importance of synchronizing the efforts of separate warfighting functions.
