Inver Grove Heights, MN, 09.22.26 – U.S. Army National Guard Sergeant Gio Adamski presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award to Sergeant Matthew Mattson, his supervisor, at the Inver Grove Heights Police Department. Sgt. Adamski stated that this award recognizes the continued support he has received throughout his employment at the police department, as they have always gone above and beyond in making his military service appreciated and supported, and that he found this award a way to honor such support. Sgt. Adamski strongly emphasized that this is an organization where service members are appreciated and supported. An additional Patriot Award was to be presented to Inver Grove Heights Police supervisor, Adam Wiederhoeft, who was unable to attend at this time but was recognized for his support and would receive the award at a later time.
An employee serving in the National Guard or Military Reserve, or the spouse of a National Guard or Military Reserve member, may nominate individual supervisors for the Patriot Award for support provided directly to the nominating service member and his or her family. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide range of measures, including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.
In addition to receiving a Patriot Award, Sergeant Mattson signed an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve “Statement of Support.” The “Statement of Support” thus confirms that they join other employers in pledging:
We fully recognize, honor, and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA).
We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
We appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.
We will continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.
Also, present was ESGR Ombudsman Director Everett Doolittle. ESGR is a Department of Defense office that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also assists in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers. This year, ESGR celebrates over 51 years of excellence in support of the Reserve Components and their civilian employers. The Above and Beyond Award was presented to Daiken Applied in Faribault on September 23, 2026. This prestigious award was presented on behalf of the U.S. Secretary of Defense and the Minnesota Committee for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Accepting the award for Daiken Applied was Director of Operations, Dean Willey. This award is given in limited numbers by ESGR State Committees to employers who have had at least one of their supervisors/managers recognized with a Patriot Award and who have signed an ESGR Statement of Support. This award will be given to only 20 businesses this year, from hundreds of Patriot Award nominations received in Minnesota, that have honored their employees’ service in the United States military by providing assistance or benefits beyond the minimum required. George Chapple of Daiken Applied had previously been awarded the ESGR Patriot Award by Sergeant First Class Coty Balfe of the 7406th Troop Medical Clinic, U.S. Army Reserves. ESGR Region Chair Paul Ragatz assisted in the Above and Beyond Award presentation.

Northwestern Glass Fab– On September 16, 2026, An ESGR Patriotic Employer Award was presented by ESGR volunteer Bob Boone. The award nomination was written up by Army National Guard Specialist Stephen Satnik. Stephen wanted to recognize Mike Penington (Supervisor) for his consistent support of Stephen’s military duties and responsibilities. Mike’s flexibility with short notice call ups for military duty are much appreciated by Stephen. Mike also continued Stephen’s salary and benefits while on military orders. Mike also signed a Statement of Support during the award presentation.

The Minnesota ESGR Committee partnered with the Minnesota National Guard and the Minnesota Twins to recognize three award winning Minnesota Companies on the field before today's baseball game. Medtronic was recognized for receiving the ESGR Extraordinary Employer Support Award, while Securian and Starkey Hearing were recognized for receiving the ESGR Pro Patria Award. Well-deserved and thank you all for supporting our service members!

Natural Resources Conservation Services supervisors were honored with two Department of War Patriotic Employer Awards.
Sergeant First Class Kim Neman of the United States Army Reserves presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award to her employment supervisors, Joseph Brennan and Troy Daniell. The award was given Monday August 24thth at the offices of the Natural Resources Conservation Services in downtown Saint Paul, MN. Sergeant First Class Neman spoke appreciatively of their continued support and assistance, and she wanted to recognize and honor them with a Patriot Award.
Minnesota ESGR Committee Member Bob Gagne assisted in the presentation.
The two recipients of the Patriot Award also signed a Statement of Support to publicly demonstrate support for employee service members.

Boston Scientific supervisor, Irmaris Lopez, honored with the Department of War Patriotic Employer Award.

Specialist Wonder Night of the Minnesota Army National Guard, presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award to his employment supervisor, Irmaris Lopez. The award was given Friday, August 21st 2026 at Boston Scientific in Arden Hills, MN, in recognition of Irmaris’ support of her employee's service to the Minnesota Army National Guard. Specialist Night was very appreciative of Irmaris’ support and assistance with his service and wanted to honor Irmaris.

Anderson Engineering of Minnesota and Medtronic are honored with high ESGR awards.
Located in Arden Hills, Minnesota, the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division has as its mission the provision of “training and readiness oversight for nine National Guard brigades with more than 23,000 Soldiers across Minnesota and twenty-three other States.”
On August 14th 2026 the General Vessey Readiness Center (GVRC) had another occupant, the Employer Support Of The Guard And Reserve Organization (ESGR), whose mission it is to promote cooperation and understanding between Military Reserve Component Service Members and their Civilian Counterparts, as well as assisting in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment.
ESGR is supported by a network of nearly 2,300 volunteers in 54 communities located across all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Guam-CNMI, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Volunteers hail from a multitude of backgrounds: business, government, academic institutions, and prior military service. Their credentials and experiences, along with those of the Headquarters Staff and a small cadre of Support Staff for each State Committee, enable them to provide Employers, Service Members, and their Families with enhanced employer support for military service in the Guard and Reserve. The session was devoted to Employer Recognition: Annual Planning and Awards Meeting (APAM) for short, and two Plymouth Business Organizations were honored for their exemplary support of their employees who are also military personnel serving their country: Anderson Engineering of Minnesota and Medtronic, both with Plymouth, Minnesota locations .
Anderson Engineering was the recipient of the Above and Beyond Award, which recognizes employers who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment rights Act by providing their Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extend health benefits, and other similar benefits.
Medtronic of Plymouth received the Extraordinary Employer Support Award (EES), which they earned subsequently to having already received the Freedom Award for continuous support of their military employees over a period of at least three years. Anderson Engineering and Medtronic of Plymouth both exhibited “Civic Belonging” in its highest form with service to their State and Country as well as service to their Customers. Prepared by Peter R.
