Join the Wheeling Township Senior Advisory Board this Friday, October 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for “Understanding Medicare: 2027 Prescription Drug Plans.” Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Counselor Bob Kerr will explain upcoming changes to Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and Part C plans for 2027, along with tips for reviewing your benefits during Open Enrollment. SHIP counselors offer free, unbiased guidance and do not sell insurance. The presentation will be held in person at Wheeling Township. Space is limited, and registration is required. The Wheeling Township Community Mental Health Board is seeking a resident to fill a volunteer vacancy for a four-year term. Board members help guide strategy and initiatives that support the WTCMHB mission, and attend monthly evening meetings.

Wheeling Township Supervisor Maria Zeller Brauer, Director of Finance and Administration Regina Stapleton, and Assistant Administrator of Social Services Julie Villarreal attended the Metropolitan Township Association’s Township Symposium on September 29. Presented by the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer, the event brought together township elected officials and staff for education and networking. Sessions covered a range of topics, including senior services, fundraising, FOIA, community health, and more. The Township looks forward to applying these insights to continue serving Township residents.

In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month in September, Wheeling Township hosted “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia,” an educational program presented by Ellen Gudjonis of the Alzheimer’s Association. Participants learned about types of dementia, disease stages, risk factors, current research and treatment options - along with resources such as the Association’s 24/7 helpline at 800-272-3900.

For caregivers seeking support, Wheeling Township also offers a monthly support group led by facilitators trained by the Alzheimer's Association. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 20, via Zoom. For details, call 847-259-7730.

Wheeling Township offers holiday assistance programs to help families experiencing financial hardships. Eligible households can receive support through the Thanksgiving Basket Program, the Adopt-A-Family Program, or both. Applicants must provide proof of Township residency and household income information. Families are encouraged to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to determine eligibility. There is also a Saturday option for families who work during the weekdays. To make an appointment, call 847-259-7730. Last weekend, Wheeling Township Community Mental Health Board President Lorri Grainawi and Board Member Jaime Clark, along with Wheeling Township Supervisor Maria Zeller Brauer and Trustee Sheri Williams, joined community members at the 2026 NAMI Northwest Suburbs Chicago NAMIWalks to raise awareness about mental health, promote understanding and help break the stigma surrounding mental illness. The event provided a meaningful opportunity to come together, recognize the importance of mental well-being, and show support for anyone in our community who is experiencing challenges.
