VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System

, today is National Former Prisoners of War Recognition Day, honoring the courageous men and women who endured brutal treatment at the hands of their captors during their captivity. April 9th was chosen because in 1942, the largest number of U.S. Forces were captured by Japanese troops in the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines and forced to march 65 miles to a prison camp without food or water. President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed National Prisoner of War Recognition Day in 1987 on this day to coincide with the anniversary of this Bataan Death March. Today we remember and honor our nation's Former 's.
