in 1799, our first president, George Washington, passed in his Mt. Vernon home at age 67. Richard Allen, in his eulogy for Washington, delivered "He has watched over us, and viewed our degraded and afflicted state with compassion and pity — his heart was not insensible to our sufferings."

Reportedly, Washington's last words were: “I feel myself going. I thank you for your attentions; but I pray you to take no more trouble about me. Let me go off quietly. I cannot last long.” While recognizing his flaws, including his ties to slavery, we thank him for his lasting contributions to our country and honor him today with our stately and traditional “troop step.”

Greetings. I am First Sergeant Jeb Hague. I have served in the US Army Fife and Drum Corps for almost 18 years as a fifer and a drum major. I am so thankful for many things this Thanksgiving season.

I am honored to serve with the most amazing Soldier Musicians. The Fife and Drum Corps performs at many high-profile events, and it’s absolutely awe-inspiring to see the unit in-person. I have traveled across the United States and to several international locations to share the fife and drum tradition with many diverse audiences.

I am also so thankful for my wife Amanda and daughter Shelby. They make the holidays so special, and I can’t wait to kick off the next great adventure!

Greetings! I’m SSG Chris Kowalewski, and I have been a fifer in the U. S. Army Fife and Drum Corps for one month. For Thanksgiving, I must express my gratitude for a number of things. Those include the honor of starting a career with such inspiring and friendly colleagues, having a loving and lovable family, all the opportunities I've gotten to push myself as an artist over the years, the beautiful world I get to explore (Virginia and DC - wow!), and of course Duke the 17-year-old Chiweenie. I wish a Thanksgiving full of love for all!

Women have played a key role in every war the United States has fought. During the Revolutionary War, women faced the same harsh camp conditions as Soldiers, and persevered through these hardships to provide invaluable service to the Continental Army. One of these individuals, Margaret Corbin, not only followed her husband to war, but even took his place in battle defending Fort Washington from a British and Hessian attack on November 16, 1776.

Corbin traveled with the Continental Army, staying in their camps and performing a variety of tasks such as sewing, cooking, laundry, and caring for injured Soldiers. When the British attacked Fort Washington both Margaret and her husband John leapt into action. Margaret brought water to John at the cannons for cleaning and cooling off the guns. Upon returning with a pail of water, British cannon fire struck and killed her husband. She immediately ran to the cannon to fill John’s role on the crew. With her help, the cannon continued to fire, but British cannon fire hit Corbin three times, causing severe wounds to her left arm, chest, and jaw.

She ultimately lost the use of her left arm, impeding her ability to dress and perform everyday tasks. On July 6, 1779, in recognition of her bravery at Fort Washington, Congress awarded Corbin the first pension received by a woman in American history. Corbin’s story not only illustrates her tenacity, it also exemplifies the sacrifices many women endured to aid the American cause.

Hi, my name is Staff Sgt. Jenna Veverka! I’m a trumpeter/bugler and have been in the US Army Fife and Drum Corps for two years. This Thanksgiving season, I’m so grateful for all that my job in the Corps provides.

A stable, full time job and salary as a professional musician. Lots of travel all over the country! One of my favorites trips so far was a week long tour in San Antonio for Fiesta. Support for professional development; I am still able to be involved with the International Trumpet Guild (Official) and other projects. And last, but certainly not least, wonderful colleagues who are passionate about our work but love to have fun!
