Reality Ignored How Milton Friedman and Chicago Economics Undermined American Institutions and Endangered the Global Economy

Since 1962, when Milton Friedman published Capitalism & Freedom, the Chicago School has created one side of modern American political debate. Reality Ignored describes how Friedman’s views have framed policies for every conservative politician from Barry Goldwater to Ronald Reagan to the Tea Party. This book describes how Chicago policies have damaged American society by redefining the role of fed

eral, state, and local government, by persuading American businesses to focus on short term profits rather than on innovation, productive efficiency and creating jobs, and by undermining the credibility of American financial markets. The book translates the technical jargon of economics and the posturing of political parties into an understandable version of the curious story of Chicago Economics. This book is a guide to those who want to understand why our society has declined in economic strength and international influence and how we might start to renew the strength of America.

I do not understand why people do not like Biden who has done a wonderful job on the economy and foreign relations. Trump has done nothing but lie and complain.

Facebook claims I readers who want me to write more. I have written little in the past two years. Part of the reason is that Reality Ignored summarizes much of what I think I know and want to share. Part is because Trump has depressed me. He demeans traditions of civility and actively promotes evil. In doing so he destroys the values that bind us as a community and a global entity. The list of bad -- ignoring climate change, ending trade treaties, promoting bigotry, aiding the rich rather than the needy -- is almost endless. Another part is that some insights of Reality Ignored seem to be reemerging in my formal field of antitrust and I am not sure how much I can add to that discussion. Still I think Reality Ignored provides a better and broader discussion of the ways in which Chicago Economics has distorted our economic and social community. If readers want more my other publications listed on my website www.kennethdavidson.com provide further opinions that may interest you.

As many books and articles have argued our democracy is endangered by monopolies and cartels, but Reality Ignored demonstrates antitrust is not enough. We need better housing, jobs, education, and health care.

It was Anthony Hilton, not Anthony Hopkins, who wrote the very nice column.

Anthony Hopkins of London's Evening Standard wrote a nice column about REALITY IGNORED. The BBC World Service has recorded an interview with the author about the book.
