Last week, the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) to provide Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety training to members of our staff. This training equips public safety professionals with practical tools to recognize and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. Participants learned how to provide initial support to someone who may be struggling and help connect them with appropriate care and resources. Designed specifically for public safety personnel, the training also recognizes the unique experiences and challenges of those working in the field and provides skills that can be used to support the people we serve, as well as our colleagues.

We appreciate our partnership with NIC and the opportunity to bring this valuable training to our staff as we continue investing in their professional development, wellness, and ability to serve our community with compassion and care.

Our hearts are with the members of the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office as they mourn the heartbreaking loss of one of their own.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow deputies of Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III, who was tragically killed in the line of duty while assisting at the scene of a crash on Thursday.

Deputy Duvall's dedication to serving and protecting his community will never be forgotten. Please keep his loved ones and the entire Appomattox County Sheriff's Office family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

🚨 Speeding Catches Up with You🚨

Speeding doesn't just put the driver at risk, it endangers everyone on the road. Higher speeds reduce reaction time, increase stopping distances, and make crashes far more severe.

In 2025, Virginia experienced more than 22,500 speed-related crashes, including 342 fatalities.

Help keep our roads safe:
🚗 Follow posted speed limits.
🌧️ Slow down for road, weather, and traffic conditions.
⏱️ Plan ahead so you don't feel rushed.
🚫 Avoid aggressive driving.

A few minutes saved is never worth the risk. Slow down and help everyone arrive safely.

📚🎒 Help Us Give Barrett Elementary Students a Strong Start to the School Year! 🎒📚

The Arlington County Sheriff's Office and After School Enrichment Matters (ASEM) are partnering with Barrett Elementary School to collect new backpacks and school supplies for students as they prepare to head back to the classroom.

From July 27 through August 18, we're asking our community to help ensure every student has the tools they need to learn, grow, and succeed. Donations of new backpacks, notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue sticks, scissors, binders, and other classroom essentials are greatly appreciated.

🛍️ Now is a great time to give! Virginia's Sales Tax Holiday (August 7-9) makes many qualifying school supplies available tax-free, allowing your donation to go even further.

📍 Donation Locations:
Arlington County Sheriff's Office - Courthouse (First Floor Law Library and 9th Floor Lobby, 1425 N. Courthouse Rd. - past security)
Arlington County Detention Facility Lobby (1435 N. Courthouse Rd.)
Barrett Elementary School (4401 N. Henderson Rd.)

Every backpack and every school supply make a difference. Together, we can help Barrett Elementary students start the school year with confidence and everything they need for a successful year ahead.

Thank you for supporting our students and strengthening our community! ❤️
