National Guard World Class Athletes National Guard World Class Athletes This program allows Soldier/athletes to compete and achieve excellence while serving in the military.

The National Guard World Class Athletes are members of the National Guard and have applied and qualified for the Army's World Class Athlete Program (WCAP). The Army World Class Athlete Program is a program that provides outstanding Soldier-athletes with support and training to compete and succeed in national and international competitions and in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Congrats to Team USA for capturing GOLD at the World Championship 2-man bobsled event. Past World Class Athlete Soldier Steve Holcomb claimed the gold with civilian Steve Langton. WCAP Soldiers finished 6th (SGT John Napier and CPT Chris Fogt) and 9th (PFC Nick Cunningham and SGT Dallas Robinson). SGT Olsen and Steve Holcomb also helped Team USA-1 claim the Team event gold medal. Also in the Team Competition, SGT Robinson teamed with PFC Cunningham in the 2-Man Bobsled run helping Team USA-2 to a fourth place finish.

National Guard Soldier/athlete Spc. Nick Cunningham has raced to 8 medals so far this season in the America's Cup Competition. Spc. Cunningham took the bobsled driver's seat after competing as a push athlete and racing in the 2010 Olympics. And coach Sgt. Rohbock took the driver's seat as well to finish with a bronze in the Park City America's Cup race. Follow Spc. Cunningham and Sgt. Robock this season at www.bobsled.teamusa.org.

As a push athlete for driver John Napier, Jesse Beckom helped win a silver medal at the 2009 National Championships and an 11th place finish at the 2009 World Championships.

While many of us enjoyed a Thanksgiving at home our Soldier/athletes were hard at work. In one of the many races over the weekend, SGT Napier teamed with CPT Fogt and finished in 5th place in the Europa Cup Bobsled Races at Konigssee, Germany.

And in luge SGT Preston Griffall and SGT Mattew Mortensen competed at the World Cup Luge races at Igls, Austria and finished in 11th place with a 2 run combined time of 1:19.486.

National Guard Soldier/athletes (2LT Mike Kohn, SGT Shauna Rohbock, SGT Courtney Zablocki, and PFC Justin Olsen) made an apperance at the annual Association of the United States Army (AUSA) convention in Washington, DC this week. They had the honor of meeting the Acting Director of the Army National Guard, Major General Raymond Carpenter at the event.

With the start of the 2011-12 luge season three days away, Ashley Walden started things out right; by winning her 10th-career start title during the National Guard Luge Start Championships held on October 7. The event was held at the USA Luge indoor start training complex located in Lake Placid.

This summer he completed Officer Candidate School (OCS) to be promoted to 2LT and was aslo selected to the Qualification Course ('Q' course) after making it through Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS). Congrats to PFC Olsen who was named to USA 1 after the Bobsled Push Championships. PFC Olsen is a 2010 Olympic Gold medalist and a recent NY National Guard member. The winter season is just around the corner for bobsled and luge athletes with the Lake Placid track set to open Oct. 10.

Congrats to Sgt. Golden Coachman for finishing 3rd at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, TN. Coachman competes in the 800 meter and finished with a time of 1:47.55. Way to go!
