Mystic River Watershed Association Welcome to the Mystic River Watershed Association. To our knowledge, the watershed is on the colonized lands of the Massachusett, Nipmuc, and Pawtucket tribes.

MyRWA accomplishes this work through the efforts of professional staff and thousands of volunteers working together on a project-by-pro

ject basis. MyRWA wishes to honor and acknowledge the indigenous communities native to this region and its past, present, and future. The name “Mystic” comes from the term that these tribes used for the river — “Missi-Tuk,” which means “great tidal river.” As you explore the watershed, we encourage you to learn with us about its past and current indigenous heritage.

💡 Did you know that the Mystic River used to be tidal all the way up into Medford?

Over the decades, humans have changed the Mystic in countless ways as we've built our communities along its banks. Now, as we face new threats due to climate change, it's time to think of the river again. How can we live in better relationship with this being that flows through all of our lives?

Explore the past, present, and future of the Mystic River in this new short film we created with the Museum of Science, Boston. Narrated by "son of the Mystic River," Terry E. Carter, "Climate Stories: The Mighty Mystic" premiered at the Museum of Science Mugar Omni Theater during Earth Week. We are thrilled to be able to share it now in small-screen form!

Learn more about how the Mystic has changed over the years and how we're preparing for present and future climate threats at our website, www.mysticriver.org.

Our river herring migration is well underway, and the birds have noticed! For our this month, we're featuring this photograph by Colleen Garrigan of a great blue heron waiting for river herring at the spillway of the Scalley Dam at Horn Pond in Woburn.

Herring are important to our ecosystem, providing food for many animals, including bald eagles, herons, herring gulls, striped bass, and snapping turtles. Our herring monitor volunteers have been counting herring since April and will continue through June.

Right now, because of the dam and a statewide drought, the herring are having trouble making it up the spillway at the dam and into Horn Pond. The Horn Pond fish passage, set to be built later this year, will solve this problem, giving herring easy passage into Horn Pond!

You can learn more about the river herring at www.mysticherring.org.

🌎️ Watch Climate Stories: The Mighty Mystic on YouTube!

In April, we shared an exciting collaboration with the Museum of Science, Boston - the short film, Climate Stories: The Mighty Mystic at the Mugar Omni Theater. We are thrilled to announce that the film is now available to view for free on YouTube.

Narrated by "son of the Mystic River," Terry E. Carter, this film tells the story of the Mystic River and how its history has shaped the present and future challenges that it and the communities around it are facing due to climate change.

This morning we celebrated Mystic Champions - partners in our shared mission of regional collaboration towards healthier and more climate resilient communities!

We were thrilled to present U.S. Congresswoman Katherine Clark with the Mystic Champion Award for her longstanding support of MyRWA's work and the many cities and towns across the watershed that she represents. Rep Clark’s advocacy is visibly woven into the landscape of this watershed. She has secured over $39M in Community Projects Funding to drive clean water initiatives and climate-resilience projects for Mystic River watershed municipalities. We have immense gratitude to her and her team for bringing this support to essential local projects.

We were also delighted to highlight the The City of Woburn as our 2026 Mystic Leadership Award recipient. Captained by Mayor Mike Concannon, the City of Woburn is taking on some of the watershed’s most ambitious projects - a state of the art fish passage, heat and flood resilient Hurld Park, and multiple interventions to protect communities from stormwater. The teamwork between municipal departments and the spirit of community service that emulates within Woburn and to their watershed neighbors inspires us every day.

Thank you Mystic Champions!

This week, we had a great time with a group of intrepid volunteers, conducting a trash audit in the City of Chelsea Massachusetts- Gov. We walked from City Hall all the way down to Island End River, observing the ways trash moves and collects in streets, alleys, and property.

We're doing this work as part of the Chelsea Community Cleanup and Beatification Project, and we have two volunteer clean-ups coming up later this month! Sign up at the links below!
