Paul Harris born April 19, 1868
As a young businessman, in 1905 Harris and other businessmen in Chicago started a service group to be known as Rotary. Their first project was a public toilet in their city. Today more than 33,000 Rotary Clubs around the world with over 1.3 million members 200 countries lead and participate in service projects. These projects range from local parks and schools to water wells for places that have lost their water source to scholarships. Rotary is the world's largest non-government provider of scholarships. The biggest current project is the eradication of polio. When the project started in the late 1980s 50,000 people died every year from polio, mostly kids. Since then the incidence of polio deaths per year is a comparative handful. Transmission of the polio virus has been stopped in all but three countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan – and the virus is being contained within increasingly smaller geographic areas within those countries

The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary as expressed in our
Objects and with the just fear of God and love of our fellowmen, we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity.”
— The Rotary Foundation, THE ROTARIAN, April 1929

Without members of Rotary Clubs more children would go hungry, more families would be without water, more people would be sick and undoubtedly more than 2 billion children would be paralyzed from Polio.
