The rich scent of damp forest earth, the flash of a green anole lizard on a log, and a child's eyes widening in pure wonder. 🦎✨

This World Environment Day, we are celebrating the incredible truth that when kids are taught to care for nature, they become its natural protectors.

Through hands-on family activities in DFW, summer camps, and public field trips, we help over 30,000 guests connect deeply with our wild spaces each year.

But we can't do it alone.

Many neighbors don't know that River Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. While our beautiful 1,300-acre nature trails and park in Arlington are free to explore, our educational programs and Trinity River preservation efforts rely entirely on community generosity.

Will you help us grow the legacy this World Environment Day? Your tax-deductible donation keeps our environmental education thriving and directly supports the next generation of environmental stewards.

What happens when you give 14 incredible volunteers a morning in the woods? 🌱 They uncover lost history - literally!

Last Saturday, our amazing Privet Patrol rolled up their sleeves and removed approximately 375 invasive privet plants from the Nature Center grounds. Invasive species like privet crowd out our native Texan plants and disrupt the local ecosystem along the Trinity River.

But the best part of the day? While clearing out the overgrowth to protect our forest's health, our team actually rediscovered a park bench completely swallowed by the brush!

There’s a profound sense of liberation that happens the second you step onto a quiet nature trail. Watching native wildflowers sway in slow motion isn’t just scenic - it’s an invitation to slow down and breathe.

Out here at River Legacy, freedom isn’t loud. It is found in the unhurried rhythm of the forest, the hum of pollinators, and the space to finally let go of the day’s stress. When you are surrounded by the gentle beauty of our native Texas blooms, the constant noise of a busy life simply fades away.

These trails are a living sanctuary where you are always welcome to unplug, find your grounding, and just be. 🌸🍃

Thinking of touching this little guy? DON’T DO IT.

Spotting a flash of copper on the trail can make your heart skip a beat, but knowing what to do keeps both you and our wild neighbors safe.

On any given day at River Legacy Parks, our trails are buzzing with life - including Copperhead snakes. While encountering a venomous snake can feel startling, these incredible reptiles aren’t looking for trouble; they are simply doing their vital job as nature’s pest control, keeping our ecosystem balanced and healthy. Respecting their space ensures we can coexist beautifully in this shared habitat. If you see one on your next hike, remember these golden rules: stay calm, never touch or try to relocate it, and simply turn around or safely walk wide around it.

We’ve been trying to reach you about your shell’s extended warranty…

Did you know a box turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton?

A box turtle’s shell is made of bone and is fused to its ribs and spine. In fact, a turtle has around 50 bones in its shell alone! The outer layer is covered by keratin scutes - the same material found in your fingernails.

Box turtles get their name from a special adaptation: a hinged plastron (the bottom part of the shell) that allows them to close up tightly like a living box when threatened. This remarkable defense helps protect them from many predators.

Next time you see a box turtle, remember - you’re looking at one of nature’s most incredible suits of armor!
