Have you ever seen delicate ice ribbons forming from the base of a plant in the middle of winter?

That’s the magic of Texas Frostweed (Verbesina virginica), a native Texas wildflower with a unique trick up its leafy sleeve!

Frostweed creates its stunning "frost flowers" or ice ribbons when temperatures drop below freezing.

Here's how it happens:

🌱 As the sap inside the stem expands during freezing temperatures, it forces thin layers of water through cracks in the stem.

❄️ This water freezes instantly upon contact with the cold air, creating intricate, ribbon-like ice formations.

💧 The process continues, layer by layer, resulting in breathtaking frost sculptures that look like they belong in a winter wonderland.

Texas Frostweed isn’t just a showstopper in the winter—it’s also a vital nectar source for pollinators like monarch butterflies in the fall!

Truly, this plant is a gift to nature enthusiasts all year long. 🌿🦋

Have you spotted a frost flower this winter?

Drop your pics or tag us—we’d love to see your frosty finds! ❄️📸
