In the continued response to the #covid19 response, #acfd hazardous materials team members assigned to fire house 101 and 109, decontaminate all transport units in the county. This is an added measure to keep fellow first responders and citizens safe by using a special machine to spray a decontamination solution to the equipment using a positive charge to better cover all surfaces. This procedure is done on a weekly basis in addition to personnel decontaminating every morning and between each emergency call. #hazmat #fire #ems #washyourhands #coveryourface

In response to a request from Arlington County and four other localities, the Governor of Virginia issued an executive order allowing Arlington to delay implementation of Phase One of the “Forward Virginia” plan until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 28. http://ow.ly/vem850zF2hx

Entering Phase One in Arlington and other Northern Virginia jurisdictions, which eases restrictions on certain business operations that were put in place in response to COVID-19, will not begin until key health metrics can be met in the region.

Until then, the region will remain in “Phase Zero” of the Governor’s Forward Virginia plan.

Our members are staffing special decon units during this pandemic. These units are stationed at every hospital in the County during the day. When an ambulance transports a patient to the hospital, the decon crew does a thorough decontamination of that unit. This allows the crew of the EMS unit to focus on normal duties such us transferring patient care to hospital staff, self-decontamination and resupplying the unit to get it back in service.

It is absolutely SHAMEFUL and DISGRACEFUL what the Virginia Association of Counties and the Virginia Municipal League is trying to pull off right now. At a time when our members are on the frontlines battling to save lives from an infectious disease, and while silently worrying about our families and ourselves, VACO and VML are trying to derail our Cancer Presumption Bill and our PTSD bill before the Gov signs them into law.

*** COVID-19 update ***

As the risk of COVID-19 patients increases in our region you may see your professional firefighters and paramedics wearing an increased level of personal protective equipment (PPE). DO NOT BE ALARMED. This increase in protection is to ensure that your first responders are capable of continuing to provide emergency medical care to those in need. This equipment includes respiratory protection, eye protection, and gloves. Some providers may wear additional protection to include medical gowns.

Your Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics will be here to help you regardless of the circumstances.

Many of you have seen or heard about the large multiple building fire in the Groveton area of Fairfax County yesterday. Approximately 175 Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics (IAFF L-2068) responded to the scene supplemented by professional firefighters from mutual aide departments - Alexandria (L-2141), Arlington (L-2800), Prince Georges County (L-1619) - this requires much coordination with strategy and tactics to contain this wind driven fire and keep it from spreading to the occupied dwellings.

Yesterday's fire destroyed 5 buildings and 14 townhouses under construction, and damaged an additional 14 townhouses, 4 single-family homes, 5 apartment buildings, 1 commercial building, and 28 vehicles. A series of quick decisions meant resources were rapidly deployed. This involved our members placing themselves between the buildings with heavy fire, and the residences that were exposed as they stood strong and initiated a defensive fire attack and transitioned to an offensive fire attack. Those residences that were saved will not have to be rebuilt and could be reoccupied in short time. The damages they suffered were due to the wind and radiant heat from the engulfed buildings as little as 20 feet away. Our members stood strong to protect those occupied structures and hundreds of residents will not have to be looking for a place to live.

We are grateful that no one was seriously injured during this incident.

We are fortunate to have the support of our Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and FRD leadership as they understand the importance of safe staffing levels. They provide the resources to have each of our 38 Fairfax County Firehouses staffed with professional firefighters and paramedics 24/7/365. This means in Fairfax County all 38 Engine Companies, 14 Ladder Trucks, 8 Heavy Rescue Companies are all staffed with a minimum of 4 personnel. In addition there are 42 Medic Units, along with 7 Battalion Chiefs, 7 EMS Supervisors, Operations Deputy Chief and Captain, 3 Safety Officers and a Operations Command Aide on duty 24 hours responding through out Fairfax and into surrounding jurisdictions.

We appreciate your kind words in-person at incidents and on our social media pages. We want to thank you the citizens of Fairfax County for continuing to support your professional firefighters and paramedics. Here for you 24/7/365!
