Members of the Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall community. The fire station on Fort Myer has been closed.

At 1900 on Monday May 23rd, the Fire Chief and other upper level managers decided to close the station due to COVID Exposure. Even though members are vaccinated (not boosted) the managers still decided to send them all home. The members of the department did not take this lightly and begged to quarantine in their rooms and wear masks on calls to no avail. Upper management also opted not to call in overtime and roll the dice on your safety. The Department was already running short staffed due to hiring issues and a recent COVID Outbreak on Saturday.

We suggest that if you have an emergency, you dial 911 for Arlington County Fire Department otherwise you will be waiting for services to come from Fort McNair, thus leaving McNair without coverage.

We hope to have enough staffing to properly support you in the morning.

This is an Arlington County Fire Department recruitment flier indicating firefighters would receive top pay in 10 years. The reality is that they are nowhere close to doing that. Under the County Manager’s Current Plan firefighters with up to 4+ years of service will all be making an entry-level salary.

It's official! With the LRA's Decision and Certification of Representation for the Fire Bargaining Unit, Local 2800 become the first public employees to WIN the right to negotiate with Arlington County in over 4 decades!

We're tired of being treated by the County not as people, but as numbers on a spreadsheet.

One example of this is the County Manager's new policy regarding first responder benefits during snow emergencies, which we brought to the attention of County Board members and the Civil Service Commission - (screenshots below)

Using the Emergency Powers granted to the County Manager by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Manager DELETED the County's standard policies regarding inclement weather benefits for first responders -

**𝙈𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨.**

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘.
The same pandemic that WE have been fighting on the ground -
The same pandemic that WE have been exposed to whenever we respond to 911 calls -
The same pandemic that we've been on the front line fighting to help and support our community -

That was what the County Manager used to take away benefits from first responders.

The County Manager used one emergency that we're dealing with as the justification to change the pay policy for another emergency that we are dealing with. And when we've tried to get this addressed, we've been ignored.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲- If a citizen is having trouble breathing due to COVID, and it's snowing - we still show up - 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐦.

If a citizen is having a heart attack when it's snowing - we still show up - 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐦.

Car crash caused by snow - we're there. Fire - We're there.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎.

We think that's absurd. It's 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜 to use the pandemic, the one that WE ARE ON THE FRONT LINE RESPONDING TO , as the reason to take benefits away from us.

𝐖𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐭, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐳. We're people - People who have risked our health and safety, and the health and safety of our family members, to keep you and our community safe.

And you repay that by playing games with our livelihood.

Our members deserve better, our department deserves better, and Arlington deserves better.

But there's still time to act- You can do the right thing- Fix this - stop playing games, act in good faith, and be the leader this County needs.

Our Election for Representation for Collective Bargaining launches today!

Do the first responders have the right to have a say in the decisions made that impact their lives?

A "YES" vote will give workers a seat at the table where all decisions are made, and will ensure future commitments around pay, benefits etc will be legally binding

A "No" vote will continue to leave all the decision making power in the hands of management and politicians - requiring us to continue to beg for "commitments" that could be changed at any time.

Below is a Sample Ballot - Be sure to check your emails - if you did not receive an email let a member of the E-Board know!

The - Vote 2800!!

Tomorrow the County Manager will put forward his proposed budget to the County Board. We are hopeful that the Manager will follow through on the multi-year commitments he publicly made to Arlington's first responders to ensure all members of our department are paid & treated equitably.

On July 19th, Arlington County officially received our Petition for Election for the right to collectively bargain. However, due to delays within the County Government, as of now, firefighters have not been able to vote for the union that they have been a part of for decades to bargain on their behalf.

Based on the existing ordinance, if the County's delay prevents us from holding the election before March 1st, it will prevent firefighters from having the opportunity to receive the benefits of a collectively bargained contract until July 2024.

Thank you County Board Chair Cristol for committing to ensuring firefighters have the right to vote in a union election for a collectively bargained contract beginning in July 2023. We look forward to the amendment safeguarding workers’ rights being passed at the February meeting.
