As temperatures soar into the 90s and summer approaches, the Arlington Police Department is urging residents to take additional precautions to safeguard children, elderly individuals, and pets from the hazards of hot vehicles.
Today, officers responded to two separate incidents involving individuals left unattended in vehicles. One case involved a dog locked inside a car with the windows up and no air conditioning. Shortly after, they received a report about a child left alone in a similar situation. Fortunately, both the dog and child are safe.
These occurrences serve as a critical reminder that the temperature inside a parked car can spike rapidly, creating life-threatening conditions in mere minutes. Even on moderately warm days, the interior of a vehicle can escalate to perilous temperatures quickly. Cracking the windows or parking in the shade offers little protection against this risk.
The Arlington Police Department would like to remind everyone of these essential safety tips:
• Never leave children alone in a vehicle, even if they are sleeping or if you plan to be gone for just a few moments. Always take them with you.
• Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle, regardless of outside temperatures or whether the windows are slightly open.
• Look Before You Lock. Always check your back seat before exiting your vehicle.
• If you see a child or pet alone in a vehicle and suspect they may be in distress, call 911 immediately.
"These situations are entirely preventable," stated the Arlington Police Department. "With warmer weather and increased summer activities upon us, we urge everyone to stay vigilant and prioritize safety. Just a few minutes can make all the difference."
Remember: Look Before You Lock. Take Everyone With You. Children, older adults, and pets rely on us for their safety. By staying alert and taking simple precautions, we can help avert these tragedies and ensure a safer community for everyone this summer.
"No errand is worth a life. If you can't take them with you, don't go. Every minute counts."
The Arlington Police Department encourages residents to share this vital message with family members, friends, and caregivers to help prevent avoidable tragedies this summer.
