The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) consists of volunteer members appointed by the Arlington County Board for three-year terms. The Commission was first established in 1974 as an advisory committee to the County Board. In 1980, the Board redesigned the committee as a permanent commission to advise the County on a variety of issues affecting women today. A Resource &

Advocate:
The Commission serves as a community resource and advocate for women seeking to continuously advance and inform women in Arlington County on legal and human rights, economic equality, equal employment, and state legislation. Since its inception, the Commission has addressed a number of needs and concerns in the community. The Commission works to maintain an active voice in state legislation by continuously expressing opinions and suggestions for the County Board on legislative bills. Past issues in legislative bills supported by the Commission include, reactivation and funding of the Virginia Commission on Women; increasing penalties of stalking with a weapon; reducing state sales tax on food; and supporting victim participation and plea agreements. An Advisor:
CSW advises other County advisory groups, as well as the community, on issues of concern to women and serves as a liaison to help the County address these issues. The Commission carries out these functions through public forums, reports to the County Board, public appearances, cooperative efforts with the County and other local women’s organizations, and developing workshops that address diverse issues of concern for the community such as, health, financial, and safety issues.

Arlington Honors 2023 Women of Vision

ARLINGTON, March 10, 2023 – On Monday, March 27, 2023, the Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will honor three women with the 2023 Arlington County Women of Vision Awards for their commitment and leadership in the Arlington community.

● NONPROFIT: Krysta Jones uses her skills as a leader, mentor, and connector, raising and amplifying women’s voices. While an Arlington County employee, she helped launch Women Work (WoW), a mentoring and networking organization for women county employees. Krysta published A Seat at the Table, an interactive guide to help women and minority group members get involved in solving community problems, and founded Vote.Lead.Impact, an organization dedicated to increasing representation of Black people in Congress. She launched and hosts a podcast for The Links, Inc., an organization dedicated to the social, cultural, and civic upliftment of Black women in Arlington and Alexandria. She also produces and hosts a radio show for the Arlington League of Women Voters, and hosted a TV show on Arlington Independent Media. Krysta serves on the board of the National Women's History Alliance. She also led the establishment of the Black Women's History Committee, and her actions every day remind Arlingtonians that history is being made in the present.

● BUSINESS: Karen Rosales, the President and CEO of Arlington Community Federal Credit Union, uplifts women through thoughtful lending and financial empowerment of communities in need. While exercising responsible stewardship, she supports and mentors women at the credit union and in the community. She has led the credit union in partnering with organizations such as a local nonprofit that provides workforce development and reentry support to women coming out of incarceration; and also led in partnering with a nonprofit STEM education program for girls. Karen serves on the board at Kitchen of Purpose (formerly La Cocina), where she is passionate about workforce development opportunities for women in the food services industry, including numerous small businesses.

● GOVERNMENT: Mariflor Ventura is an Arlington County Public Schools employee who has in her personal time created a significant and transformational new giving community, CASA MARIFLOR, that has assisted hundreds of Arlingtonians with food and necessities. This community of donors and volunteers has aided families in need, particularly Hispanic immigrant families, by donating food, clothing, diapers, household supplies and even furniture, finding jobs, guiding them to county resources, and hosting events. These actions are organized by Mariflor in her spare time through her website, in person and virtual outreach, a Buckingham mutual aid group that she created, and Amazon wish list, among other initiatives.

Join us to celebrate these extraordinary women at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2023 at Arlington Economic Development’s offices, 1100 North Glebe Road, Suite 1500, Arlington VA. The offices are within walking distance of Ballston Metro, or paid garage parking is available. Thanks to the 900+ citizens who visited the Commission's booth at the Arlington County Fair 2022 and voted in our survey!

Arlington’s Commission on the Status of Women informally polled County Fair attendees on 5 topics: Reproductive Rights, childcare, economic empowerment & pay equity, sexual assault and harassment, and LGBTQ and gender non/conforming equity. We asked which one they think is most crucial for Arlington women and girls in 2022.

Although many said all are important, when asked to choose ONE, the 902 respondents selected:

Reproductive Rights: 329 votes
Childcare: 226
Pay equity / Economic empowerment: 138
Sexual assault / sexual harassment: 129
LGBTQ & gender non-conforming equity: 80

We have shared these informal results with the County Board, and appreciate the public participation.
