At 0402 hours on April 2, 2024, Reno County Fire Districts 4, 3, and 8 were dispatched to a structure fire at 3 N. Reno St in Partridge, KS. Upon arrival crews encountered a working fire in the north east part of the home. Crews made an aggressive interior attack to try and extinguish the fire. The fire extended into the attic space and began spreading very rapidly throughout the home due to strong north winds. Due to the rapid spread of the fire and deteriorating conditions inside the home, crews were pulled from the interior of the home and moved to a defensive attack from the exterior of the home.

The City of Partridge does not have hydrants or a water supply so water had to be hauled to the scene. Tender trucks from Fire Districts 6, 9, and Pretty Prairie were called in to help supply water. In all, seven 3000 gallon tenders were used to supply water to the scene. Once the fire was knocked down, crews were unable to conduct overhaul operations due to hoarder conditions and the roof collapsing. An excavator from Miller Earthworks was called in to level the home. Reno County EMS responded and conducted rehab for the working crews.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office and the Reno County Fire Administrator conducted an investigation as to the cause of the fire. Three occupants were in the home at the time of the fire and were awoken by working smoke detectors and were able to safely escape the home. The fire is being classified as accidental from careless smoking.

Update: units have cleared the fire and are back available. Follow control burning resolution for any outside burning

Controlled burning will not be allowed until further notice today 3/16/24 due to depleted fire resources out on an out of control fire.

Very high to extreme grassland fire danger is expected today across the area due to very dry, breezy, and abnormally warm conditions. Fires may start easily and spread rapidly, so avoid anything that may cause a spark.

District 4 recently received our lifting stabilizing struts. These allow us to lift and stabilize vehicles that are in areas that we cannot gain access to the patients safely. This is a needed asset to our arsenal of tools for the types of wrecks we encounter.

*We had a special safety inspector during our night training
