A citizen snapped this photo recently where officers noticed a small child who appeared to have walked out of a residence nearby. The citizen reported, “I have never seen such care, kindness, compassion and support these officers gave to this child. She ran up to the officers to shake their hand and it was obvious that each officer brought great comfort to her.”

Thank you for snapping this great pic showing what our officers do in helping the community.

Deputy Chief McGuire Walks 54 Miles to Advocate for Community-Police Relations

North District Deputy Chief Tarrick McGuire recently traveled to Alabama, where he and two of his friends who also work in law enforcement walked 54 MILES between Selma and Montgomery to advocate for improved community-police relations.

We believe that building relationships with the community is more critical now than ever before -- and we're proud that we get to serve a community in Arlington that is willing to engage with our officers and develop relationships with them, so we can all work together to make our city the best it can be!!

Deputy Chief McGuire's trip was featured on WFAA's "Reasons to Smile" segment. Check out the clip below!! And thank you to Tashara Parker for sharing this story!!

We receive letters and encouraging words on a regular basis. We wanted to share this one to highlight the compassion and kindness that some of our officers displayed during a difficult time for one of our community members who lost their loved one.

“As many of you know my mom died suddenly earlier this week. She passed away at home, and the normal procedure for the complex she lived in was to call the police. When I arrived there were four officers there, and one was posted outside waiting for me to come. All of them were incredibly kind, patient, and empathetic to my distress at having just learned of her passing. They answered all of my questions (some of them repeatedly, as I was in shock), and never once seemed anything less than interested in helping me. A grief counselor had also already been called to the scene, and stayed with me the entire time. In retrospect, I am very impressed with our city’s response to events like these, and I just wanted to take a moment to thank the Arlington Police department for training your officers for events like this one. It was very obvious to me that they had had training on how to handle these situations and I’m very grateful. I’m sorry to say I don’t remember their names, as I was really just barely able to take in everything that was happening at the time, or I would thank them all by name.”

We receive community support from all over which is so appreciated by our employees. We received this pic today of the Tarleton State University Alpha Gam sisters. Alicia Ayala, Chelsea Hummel, Kaitlyn Harris and Mckayla Silva are all daughters of Arlington’s Finest who genuinely take care of one another while also praying and supporting our APD family.

I’m working on getting a pic of all the APD kids at Tarleton but dang it’s a whooping.

Labor Day weekend is a “No Refusal” weekend. Our DWI Unit officers will be out each night to keep the streets safe. Please plan ahead with a sober ride or a designated driver.

Sad to say in Texas, someone is killed or hurt in a crash that involves alcohol about every 20 minutes.

It's a new month. It's a holiday weekend. It's the unofficial end of summer. And it's got us feeling a little bit extra this week -- so we figured we'd give y'all a DOUBLE DOSE of #FureverFriday today!!

Speaking of extra -- we wanted to go BIG with our post today!! So we recruited the entire APD Academy Class 58 (and their mentors) to help us out. They just graduated from the Basic Training Academy on Monday, and are now YOUR newest APD officers!!

And they'd like you to meet their pals Poppy, a 2-year-old Terrier Mix, and Chadwick, a 2-year-old Terrier / Pit Bull Mix.

Poppy is a very friendly girl who LOVES attention and giving kisses.

Chadwick has some energy -- and he doesn't mind one little bit if you give him some pets and rubs. He is heartworm positive, so he will need a family that can help him manage that.

If you'd like to give Poppy or Chadwick a "furever home," you can visit them at City of Arlington, TX - Animal Services, which is located at 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd.

Because of temporary restrictions in place at the shelter, you will need to make an appointment to visit / adopt a pet. You can do that by calling (817) 575-8128.

Be sure to give shelter staff Poppy's and Chadwick's ID numbers when you call:

Poppy: 45399976
Chadwick: 45386758

You hear us talk a lot about the concept of community / relational policing -- and today, we wanted to share a great example of what that actually looks like.

Recently, the mother of a UTA student reached out to both APD and The University of Texas at Arlington Police Department for help. Her son has communication impairments -- and she was worried what might happen to him if he ever had an encounter with police.

APD Officer Trevor Clenney, who is assigned to our Mental Health Unit, and UTA Police Sergeant Tom Savage agreed to meet with the student and his mother. They discussed the family's concerns, then ran several mock traffic stops with the student, so he could practice what to do / say to ensure a positive outcome if he was stopped by an officer.

They also checked to make sure the student's license had the proper markings, so any officer would be able to quickly recognize that he has communication impairments.

The student's mother sent the following note to both departments:

"Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet us and educate [my son] on what to expect during potential encounters with the UTA and Arlington PD. As parents, we are now more at ease knowing the protocol, resources, and advocates that are available to [my son] while attending UTA. We pray for your continued safety as you work to protect and serve your communities. Have a great rest of the week, and again many thanks."

We'd like to recognize both Officer Clenney and Sgt. Savage for their outstanding and exemplary work!!

Arlington Animal Services, APD Team Up to Help Cat Shot by Arrow, Take Suspect into Custody

ICYMI: When an #ArlingtonTX citizen recently reported finding a cat that had been shot by a crossbow -- an arrow still lodged in between its shoulders -- City of Arlington, TX - Animal Services sprang into action.

Not only did they save the cat's life, they got Arlington Police involved in the investigation into who shot him. And thanks to the diligent work of both the Animal Cruelty Investigator and APD detectives, they gathered enough evidence to charge the suspect with the felony.

Check out the video below to learn more about how "Robin" is doing these days -- and how the city plans to use him to spread an important message about animal cruelty.
