A photo from the latest (or earliest) program start time I’ve ever done, a 1am Orionid Meteor Shower watch party!

It was absolutely incredible, as I saw the brightest meteor I can ever remember. We were also serenaded by several Great Horned and Barred Owls and even a pack of coyotes howling and yipping! An unforgettable experience. While I didn’t get any photos of meteors, here is the constellation Orion, which the meteor shower was named after! 💫 🌌

Our NOVA Parks Roving Naturalist have an AMAZING event for the viewing of Orionid Meteor Shower!

Join the Roving Naturalist for a late night (early morning) meteor shower watch party! Every October, the earth passes through a debris field produced by Halley's Comet; causing the Orionid Meteor Shower. As crazy as it seems, 1:00am is the best time to get outside and see the highest volume of meteors.

🚨 RARE BIRD ALERT! 🚨 Saturday was truly an incredible birthday (birdday!) as I got to see a rare bird at our own Upton Hill Regional Park! The Connecticut Warbler migrates through the east coast in fall and is rarely seen as it spends most of its time in dense vegetation. A big bday gift for me! While we are in its migration path here in Northern Virginia, this bird still flags as rare or highly uncommon.

Warblers really must love me. I’m at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens setting up for the winter walk of lights. I’m on a ladder with a string of lights in a Japanese Maple when all of a sudden I’m greeted by an American Redstart and Blackburnian Warbler no more than 4 feet away from me!

These precious little birds likely came in last night and are already preparing to continue their journey to Central and South America for the winter. This was an immature Blackburnian Warbler, but I’ll share a photo I took of an adult male at their breeding grounds in the mountains of Virginia.

Our biggest discovery during the Pohick Creek Explorer’s Paddle was the presence of Soras, super secretive birds that utilize freshwater tidal marshes during migration as bird “gas stations”. We were able to locate them again on yesterday’s paddle. Out of 880+ eBird lists dating back to 1966, this was the FIRST report of these birds at Pohick Bay Regional Park!
