Feminist Majority Foundation

Feminist Majority Foundation Feminism (n.) - the policy, practice or advocacy of political, economic, and social equality for women. (http://feminist.org) The FMF is an organization dedicated to women's equality, reproductive health, and non-violence.

In all spheres, FMF utilizes research and action to empower women economically, socially, and politically. Our organization believes that feminists - both women and men, girls and boys - are the majority, but this majority must be empowered.

Mission: Advancing the legal, social and political equality of women with men, countering the backlash to women's advancement, and recruiting and training young feminists to encourage future leadership for the feminist movement in the United States. To carry out these aims, FMF engages in research and public policy development, public education programs, grassroots organizing projects, leadership training and development programs, and participates in and organizes forums on issues of women's equality and empowerment. Our sister organization, the Feminist Majority, engages in lobbying and other direct political action, pursuing equality between women and men through legislative avenues. The FMF has also published Ms. Magazine since 2001. Comments that are off-topic or contain hate speech, offensive language, aggressive harassment, abuse, attacks of blog authors or commenters, threats of violence, or slurs based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or political views will be deleted.

It's Her Choice: Amy Coney Barrett Can Refuse SCOTUS Confirmation - Ms. Magazine

"My hope is that Barrett will choose what is right, by refusing confirmation, if only for love for the Court’s high calling. This would return many cherished beliefs, not just to her colleagues and fellow Americans, but to the world."

Scores of Notre Dame professors signed a letter of objections to Barrett's nomination. One goes further—and asks Barrett to refuse final confirmation now.

8. Equality is on the Ballot - Ms. Magazine

On January 15, 2020, Virginia became the critical 38th and final state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment—a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that reads: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” Yet, the ERA has not been added to the Constitution. Virginia’s ratification raised important questions about the viability of an amendment that had been stymied for decades—and made clear just how much the ERA is still needed. This week, Dr. Michele Goodwin discusses these issues on Ms. magazine’s On The Issues podcast to ask: what promise does the ERA hold in the continued battle for equality and freedom? And why are the coming elections so critical? Tune in now. https://msmagazine.com/podcast/8-equality-is-on-the-ballot/

Our thoughts are with Breonna Taylor’s family and loved ones as they continue the fight to get the justice she is due. We will continue to say Breonna Taylor’s name and demand action from elected officials for the lives lost to anti-Black violence and police brutality.

Capturing The Flag is an urgent cautionary tale that documents what’s in store for the fast approaching election of 2020, and a close-up look of American democracy at its most vulnerable point. Through the intimate experiences of the film’s citizen volunteers — and the hundreds of voters they try to assist — the human dimension of democracy comes into focus. Their journeys as citizens of conscience uncover stories about the strength and fragility of American democracy that are rarely heard. The shocking voter suppression we see unfold in real time in Capturing The Flag is proliferating across the country, as those who control local elections have been emboldened to rewrite access to the ballot box along partisan lines. The film serves as both a warning and a call to action for anyone interested in protecting the “One Person, One Vote” fundamental of our democracy.

The Feminist Majority Foundation Stands with the March on Washington Against Police Brutality – Feminist Majority Foundation

"The time for action is now. The twin pandemics of racism and COVID-19 are killing Black people in the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. The lack of action by policymakers and law enforcement has resulted in what amounts to a genocide. The time is long overdue to heed the calls to defund the police and make real changes to end the racism that both endangers and terrorizes millions of Black Americans. As we reflect on the message of today’s march, we join the calls for immediate justice for the many lives needlessly lost to racist violence.”

Pandemic Puts a Spotlight on Black Women’s Pay Gap – Feminist Majority Foundation

Today is #BlackWomensEqualPayDay. Black women make up 1 in 3 essential workers on the frontlines of the pandemic and are criminally underpaid for their labor. It's time to pay them what they deserve, today and every day.

This year, August 13 marks Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which represents the approximate date into the new year that Black women must work in order to make what the average white non-Hispanic man made the previous year, recognizing the steep wage gap. Unlike other years, however, the date falls in...

As the largest government funder of global health, including family planning and reproductive health services, the U.S. plays a vital role in improving public health around the world.

The Helms Amendment is a clear and direct impediment to reducing maternal mortality and morbidity, empowering women and promoting gender equality, and upholding human rights.

The U.S. should use its foreign assistance to provide access to quality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care services for all people, which includes safe, legal and accessible abortion.

It is time to repeal this harmful policy and allow the use of U.S. funds to support safe abortion services worldwide. #RepealHelms www.repealhelms.org

After Representative Ted Yoho (R-FL) failed to apologize for a vulgar verbal attack on Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) earlier this week, claiming that he “cannot apologize for his passion,” Ocasio-Cortez and her female Democratic colleagues addressed the incident on Thursday. In their speeches, these representatives dissected the unmistakable patterns of dehumanization and sexism that women face, as well as specific examples of the ways in which such patterns are woven into the fabric that constitutes the culture of the United States Congress.

Supreme Court Upholds Religious and Moral Exemptions for ACA Birth Control Coverage | Feminist Newswire

"Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court is a devastating blow to millions of women, transgender, and nonbinary people who rely on their employer-provided healthcare to cover the high costs of contraceptives. This move gives their employers the power to make decisions about their employee’s healthcare without their consent,” said the Feminist Majority Foundation in a statement. “This decision hurts most those who can least afford birth control including young women, poor women, and disproportionately women of color. Today’s ruling emphasizes the urgent need for Congress to codify the coverage of contraceptives as part of the preventative healthcare package included in the ACA.”

In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court upheld a Trump Administration rule which expands the types of organizations that can claim religious or moral exemptions under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The rule allows these organizations to refuse to cover birth control under their health insurance plans.....

The Feminist Majority Foundation Applauds Supreme Court Decision on DACA | Feminist Newswire

“The Supreme Court has reinforced what we have known from the beginning of this fight: this country is the home of the Dreamers,” said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation. “The uncertainty and fear the Dreamers and their families have been living with as this case made its’ way through the courts is unconscionable. DACA recipients are a vital part of the fabric of our communities and deserve a life free from the fear of deportation. We celebrate this decision and demand that the Senate pass the DREAM Act, which has already been passed by the House, to make this temporary win permanent. We need to establish a clear path to citizenship for the Dreamers and all undocumented people.”

General information

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) is a consciousness raising organization founded and led by Eleanor Smeal and inspired by the Newsweek/Gallup public opinion poll that showed the majority of women (56%) in the United States self-identified as feminists. Most polls since then reveal that this majority continues with over two-thirds of young women self-identifying as feminists. Most men, especially young men, view themselves as supporters of the women's rights movement.
