What’s happening in Afghanistan is heartbreaking. The gains Afghan women have made over the past twenty years are being erased as the Taliban takes control.

As a photojournalist covering Afghanistan for two decades, I’ve seen how hard the country’s women have fought for their freedom, and how much they have gained. Now they stand to lose everything.

“Senator Kyrsten Sinema was once a clear progressive voice for equal rights,” said Huerta, a founding board member of Feminist Majority, “but now, she is one of the few senators who hang in the balance of making or breaking an end to the filibuster to clear the way for constitutional rights for women and voting rights for all Americans.”

Equal Rights Amendment supporters delivered letters to Sen. Kyrsten Sinema to end the filibuster so the Senate can remove the time limit on the ERA.

Black women make 63 cents for every dollar a white man earns. It's time to end the wealth gap and pay Black women what they are owed.

Aug. 3 marks Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, or the day Black women must work into 2021 to finally catch up to what white, non-Hispanic men earned in 2020. Author Minda Harts says companies now have a unique opportunity to even the playing field.

“White supremacy is the thread that ties everything together,” said Kumar. “From the insurrection we saw on 6 January to the racial uprisings to the uptick in anti-abortion legislation [in the US],” she said.

Kumar added that, while the most militant groups have small direct memberships, their ideology has proved sufficiently appealing to attract legislators and new followers.

“This is the bright shining light that needs to be put on this issue, that all people should be concerned about these groups,” said Kumar. “Because their agenda is really big and far-reaching.”

"Both Gailani and Koofi know that many Afghan women are worried that after being victims of men’s wars, they will be victims of peace. As the Taliban come closer to gaining power in the government, violence has increased, including targeted killings of those best able to maintain the gains of the past two decades: activists, intellectuals, journalists and government workers. Koofi has survived two assassination attempts, the latest this past summer as she and her daughter rode back to Kabul from Parwan Province (a bullet shattered a bone in her arm)."

We urge President Biden to support the reproductive health and rights of people living overseas.

U.S. policies like the Helms Amendment are anti-rights and rooted in racism and colonialism. It is time for U.S. assistance programs to provide access to quality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care services for all people, including access to abortion care.

President Biden can act now by ensuring that his budget is free from abortion restrictions, including the Helms Amendment.

"For my people, obtaining an education is our best hope at weakening the power of extremists in Afghanistan. The Hazara community sees education and civic engagement as a way to emerge out of oppression and resist injustice. Education is our power. The extremists may try to take that power, and the targeted killings of the Hazara are a symptom of the deeply rooted hatred of Hazara people. Their goal is clear: to eliminate the Hazara, to wage civil war.

I am calling today for the urgent attention of the United States and the international community. We must re-think the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. The lives of the Hazara depend on it."

This opinion piece is by Zareen Taj, originally written for Ms. Monday morning, I received more than 40 pictures and six video clips from the horrific mass killing of innocent Hazara girls in Kabul on Saturday. I cannot stop screaming. They were too young and full of dreams to have their lives cut s...

The Afghan women were clear in their message to Congress: that the Afghan people need the U.S. support, that they value this partnership, and share the same values of equal rights for all and a democracy in which all Afghans thrive and have equal opportunities.
