Kiwanis Club of Arlington has settled into regular weekly Zoom meetings on account of the coronavirus threat. Today's meeting featured author George Axiotis who described for us the 1896 "shoot out" in Jackson City, which was located on the Virginia side of the Long Bridge, now known as the 14th Street Bridge. Jackson City hosted some shady businesses including gambling, saloons, race tracks, brothels, lotteries, even gambling ships that plied the waters of the Potomac. Elected in 1895, Sheriff William H. Palmer aimed to clean up some of these establishments. His deputy, Edward Deuterman and a posse of 8 raided John C. Nelson's gambling den on 20 February 1896, with mixed results. The tale is told in his book, Shoot Out in Jackson City.

Kiwanis blueberries are coming! Once again, the Kiwanis Club of Arlington is selling luscious blueberries — “so fresh you’ll think you picked them yourself” — in 10 pound boxes for $35.00. They will arrive the last week of June and will be available for pickup at Cherrydale Methodist Church, 3701 Lorcum Lane, Arlington. In keeping with CDC coronavirus guidelines, social distancing will be observed and orders must be placed in advance. Please place your order online at: http://ArlingtonVaKiwanis.com/blueberries-2.

We also encourage blueberry donations to AFAC. When placing your order, please consider purchasing a box or two for families in need during the current food crisis. Or, you may choose to designate your entire purchase for AFAC.

The deadline for blueberry orders is June 12. Don’t miss this opportunity to put healthy blueberries on your table and on the tables of our hungry neighbors. You’ll also be supporting scholarships for deserving Arlington students and the many safety-net charities that benefit from Kiwanis grants. Definitely a win-win for everyone.

The program was an update from Delegate Patrick Hope on the accomplishments of the Virginia General Assembly this term. He briefed us on the many bills considered and passed, including budget increases for schools and higher education, improvements to the health care system, casinos and sports betting, money for affordable housing, criminal justice reform, a raise in Virginia's minimum wage over 3 years, improvements to environmental policy and standards, and changes to immunization policy.
