We are the largest service club in Arlington, Virginia, and we are constantly seeking to enlarge and expand our membership. Our club serves the children of our community and globally in a variety of ways. We support youth leadership organizations in the schools through Key Clubs at Bishop O’Connell, Washington-Lee and Yorktown High Schools, Swanson Middle School and a K-Kids Club at Arlington Traditional Elementary School. Through these clubs we promote leadership training and community service for Arlington's youth. The combined efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Arlington and our affiliated Arlington Kiwanis Foundation funnel between $70,000-$80,000 per year to the youth organizations and other community educational and charitable organizations primarily serving the children of Arlington or Northern Virginia. Our members participate in several fundraisers during the year to raise a large portion of these funds. In addition, the club organizes a variety of hands-on projects during the year such as bagging groceries at the Arlington Food Assistance Center, reading to young children in the schools, providing dinner to a women’s shelter and ringing bells on behalf of the Salvation Army for a week prior to Christmas. This year we were able to participate in Lose the Training Wheels, helping challenged children to learn to ride a bicycle. We estimate that we serve approximately 5000 children each year, 2000 children with our hands-on projects and an additional 3000 children with our grants to our partner agencies.

Mission: Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The Kiwanis Club of Arlington is committed to providing service that is crucial to the children of Arlington, Virginia.

Kiwanis Club of Arlington has settled into regular weekly Zoom meetings on account of the coronavirus threat. Today's meeting featured author George Axiotis who described for us the 1896 "shoot out" in Jackson City, which was located on the Virginia side of the Long Bridge, now known as the 14th Street Bridge. Jackson City hosted some shady businesses including gambling, saloons, race tracks, brothels, lotteries, even gambling ships that plied the waters of the Potomac. Elected in 1895, Sheriff William H. Palmer aimed to clean up some of these establishments. His deputy, Edward Deuterman and a posse of 8 raided John C. Nelson's gambling den on 20 February 1896, with mixed results. The tale is told in his book, Shoot Out in Jackson City.

Kiwanis blueberries are coming! Once again, the Kiwanis Club of Arlington is selling luscious blueberries — “so fresh you’ll think you picked them yourself” — in 10 pound boxes for $35.00. They will arrive the last week of June and will be available for pickup at Cherrydale Methodist Church, 3701 Lorcum Lane, Arlington. In keeping with CDC coronavirus guidelines, social distancing will be observed and orders must be placed in advance. Please place your order online at: http://ArlingtonVaKiwanis.com/blueberries-2.

We also encourage blueberry donations to AFAC. When placing your order, please consider purchasing a box or two for families in need during the current food crisis. Or, you may choose to designate your entire purchase for AFAC.

The deadline for blueberry orders is June 12. Don’t miss this opportunity to put healthy blueberries on your table and on the tables of our hungry neighbors. You’ll also be supporting scholarships for deserving Arlington students and the many safety-net charities that benefit from Kiwanis grants. Definitely a win-win for everyone.
