Arlington West Rotary Club is very proud of their involvement with the Arlington group project to help out Arlington Charities in their time of need. Want to give a special thanks to Dr. Allan Saxe for his help with Arlington Wests contribution. He and our Rotarians are such great people. 💜

Last week, we were blessed to be visited by not one, but seven local rotary clubs who came to make donations after hearing the news that Arlington Charities had been damaged by the recent EF2 tornado. Rotary Club of Arlington - Texas, Arlington, TX - North Rotary Club, Arlington West Rotary Club, Arlington Sunrise Rotary, Arlington Great Southwest Rotary Club, Arlington Highlands Rotary, and Arlington Sunset Rotary Club were among the clubs to donate. As we head into a New Year where our high distribution rates are expected to stay the same, these donations come at a pivotal time.

It took less than two weeks for the seven Arlington Rotary Clubs to spring into action after a meeting was called between each of the club’s presidents to discuss how to help Arlington businesses affected by the recent tornado. Although the idea was a group effort, each club stopped by individually to make donations of shelf stable foods and monetary contributions. Canned veggies, pasta, spaghetti sauce, macaroni, and cake mixes were among some of the many items that were donated by the various groups.

“Thank you to our Arlington Rotaries for always putting service above self,” says Deborah Coppola, the executive director of Arlington Charities. “This help will impact our most vulnerable neighbors this holiday season.”

In Spring 2019, we donated five electronic keyboards and stands to H.O.P.E. Tutoring for their Summer 2019 Music Camp. Our awesome member, Bud Thames, was a lead teacher in the music program! Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, Hope Tutoring was unable to continue the music program. Therefore, we agreed to rehome the keyboards and stands to Carter Junior High in Arlington, Texas. We hope you enjoy!

The man in the iron lung

An interesting read about polio and its effects, by the last man in an iron lung here in the states. Rotary has done so much good in its work on eradicating polio. This is an interesting look into just why we are working so hard.

The long read: When he was six, Paul Alexander contracted polio and was paralysed for life. Today he is 74, and one of the last people in the world still using an iron lung. But after surviving one deadly outbreak, he did not expect to find himself threatened by another

We had a wonderful Arlington West Rotary meeting yesterday via Zoom Meetings! Our program was Deputy Chief, Carol Riddle, with Arlington Police Departments West Division. Here are a few facts that we learned:

1. No Arlington city employees / police officers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 to date.

2. No increased DWIs since Gov. Abbott approved restaurants to be able to sell alcohol in pickup / delivery orders.

3. The new Texas Drivers license w/ gold star was suppose to be mandatory on 10/01/2020. It has now postponed to 10/01/2021.
