Pollinators need your help in the winter too

It’s often referred to as “lazy gardening” but leaving the leaves, stems, etc. is an intentional strategy!

Native Plants in the Cutting Garden (Part One) - SlowFlowers Journal

In case you’ve ever wondered, “Why no pansies?“ Or “Why don’t they trim it more?“ or “Why don’t they rake the leaves out of the beds?“ —this article describes the approach to plant selection and management in the Lyon Park Garden.

A Nature Conservancy manager advocates for growing more native plants — for the garden and the vase I’m lucky enough to own a small, sunny lot in Arlington, Virginia where I’ve been gardening, observing and learning for 25 years. In the beginning, my garden’s focus was to grow “plants I ....

I’m delighted to announce a partnership with Long Branch Park, the natural area behind the school that’s getting a nice volunteer-led restoration. In the Lyon Park Garden, I always fret over the balance between tidiness (which the neighbors and renters want) and leaving material over the winter for wildlife. Well this year we are hauling our stalks down to Long Branch Park so that the good bugs who have spent the winter in the stalks can emerge there! Hooray!
