It’s a groundbreaking program designed to *launch* our program participants into successful, sustainable careers that make a difference in their lives, and change the companies they join for the better. We couldn’t have done it without our many generous partners, especially our friends at Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF). #MEAF

Excited to support American Association of People with Disabilities Summer Intern Alumni Network to continue to support their professional development and provide an opportunity for the alumni to mentor the next generation of interns. #MPWRpossible

The American Association of People with Disabilities, made possible with a new two-year grant from Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF), are pleased to announce the launch of the AAPD Alumni Network, to capitalize on the success of the AAPD Summer Internship Program!

AAPD and MEAF joined forces in 2002 to design a congressional summer internship program for college students with disabilities, and since then has placed more than 300 students in the halls of Congress and beyond.

Now, the AAPD Alumni Network will equip participants with resources to advance in their careers, will include an Ambassadors Council, and programming will include activities related to employment with two regional in-person meetings.

Excited to hear about Charlotte's experience as a participant in Career [email protected] School for the Blind, which MEAF is proud to support. #MPWRpossible

Our Career Launch @ Perkins program is so much more than a job training and internship program. Just ask Julie Backer, parent of a Fall 2019 program participant, from Chicago, Illinois:

“Charlotte is really confident like she’s never been confident before, independent like she’s never been before, and ready for the next step to her future. I couldn’t say that six months ago. I for sure couldn’t say that a year ago, and it’s very exciting.” New Year - New Career!

Intelligent Lives

Award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib discusses his honest portrayal of the complexities of #inclusion, while focused on evidence-based practices in Intelligent Lives and his other films. MEAF is proud to support Dan’s work.

"I don’t make films that prescribe easy solutions, because there are none. But I do think my films capture evidence-based practices in action in real schools, through the eyes and lives of educators, students, and families. I’d consider myself an inclusion advocate, but with a journalist’s approach to making honest films that don’t sugarcoat the complexity of the issues."

Dan Habib chats with the Inclusive Schools Network in "Author Q&A"--read it here!

General information

The idea to establish a foundation began in 1989, when a group of Mitsubishi Electric executives decided that, after 20 years of doing business in the US, it was time to give back to the community. The 15 executives each put $100 on the table toward the foundation. By February 1991, that $1500 had grown to a $15 million endowment through contributions from the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan and its US subsidiaries, and the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation was launched. The Foundation's national mission of serving young people with disabilities has not changed over the years, and its priorities remain independence, productivity, and community inclusion. More than $9 million have been invested in organizations ranging from the American Foundation for the Blind to the Girl Scouts of the USA. MEAF invests in National Grant projects that promote the full inclusion of youth of all abilities in the areas of education, career preparation, recreation, volunteering and the arts. The Foundation also matches the donations of Mitsubishi Electric companies and their employees through Company Grant programs helping to support youth in the communities where our employees live and work. While it is impossible to precisely measure the human impact of these investments, we estimate they have helped thousands of children to live fuller, more productive lives. Numbers count, and multiplier effects are an important consideration in making grant decisions. But the Foundation also focuses on the individual and the value of each person's life. In the spirit of the Starfish story, we seek to make a difference, one starfish at a time.

I am disabled. For this reason, I've been unemployed for the last 24 years. I have an intense, desire to be a productive member of society. I also have another negative constraint, I'm 62 years old. I'm facing the negative opinions of a disability as well as that of older adults. As I mentioned, I have an insatiable drive to work, my disability is under good control and I'm reasonably well educated. I posses a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Auburn University with a major in Transportation and a minor in Management. I have also completed a considerable amount of work towards a Master of Science degree. I have worked in dispatch, sales and operations in the motor carrier industry My last job was with the U.S. Postal Service sorting mail. I worked hard at all of these jobs. I attempted to do the work of two. I realized I should have paced myself, working to achieve higher productivity over a period of time. I am here asking if anyone may know of someone with an open heart and mind who is willing to give me an opportunity to reenter the workforce.
Thank you for your help in sponsoring the 2018 National Council for Independent Living (NCIL) Conference. Your company makes a difference in the lives of Americans with disabilities!
