Excited to share news about the Blue Star Recyclers and Sipi Asset Recovery collaboration to empower students with disabilities to transition to competitive jobs. MEAF is proud to support the E-Stewards - Electronics Recycling ADVANCE+ program. #MPWRpossible #itmatterstoME

Blue Star Recyclers is proud to announce the launch of a very special collaboration between Sipi Asset Recovery and Blue Star Recyclers in Chicagoland. Sipi was the first e-Stewards certified recycler to complete training in the Advance+ Program, where they received training on workforce inclusion of people with disabilities by utilizing Blue Star's model.

To enhance the shared impact of the program Sipi and Blue Star have formed a partnership where Sipi will provide materials to help Blue Star provide vocational training to special ed/transitions students from several NW Chicago suburban school districts. This will support our new operations in Buffalo Grove, IL, and will create an upstream source of talent for Sipi's operations in nearby Elk Grove, IL. The e-Stewards Advance + Program is funded by Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation and Smith Charitable Trust, providing workforce inclusion training to twenty e-Stewards certified recyclers in 2020 and 2021.

#MPWRpossible #itmatterstoME

We hoped everyone enjoyed following along with the 2020 AAPD Disability Advocacy Certificate’s Portrait of Empowerment series. You can check out their stories here: https://bit.ly/304ZzuL
A big thank you to our sponsors who supported us this summer to translate the Certificate Program online: Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF), AT&T, Coca-Cola, Arconic Foundation, Microsoft and the Aid Association of the Blind District of Columbia.

The 10-week virtual Certificate Program prepared participants to be knowledgeable and effective advocates and representatives for the disability community. They became familiar with the history of
disability rights movement, disability legislation, and more with experts. This program was done in partnership with Professor Rob Engel at American University, who helped translate the program online and include more local and state level advocacy.

We covered a wide range of topics including: storytelling, ADA, Medicaid, IDEA, employment, voting, and building a relationship with your elected officials. We had 36 speakers who shared their experience and expertise. Thank you to everyone who participated: Mary Dolan, Jim Dickson, Emily Ladau, Day Al-Mohamed, Sara Luterman, Blessit Shawn Bryant, Teresa Nguyen, Rabia Belt, Majority Whip Steny Hoyer, Senator Tom Harkin, Matt Cortland, Diana Cejas, Emily Kim, Abby McCartney, Swarna Vallurupalli, Jane West, Kimberly Knackstedt, David Johns, Shain Neumeier, Meredith DeDona, Liz Weintraub, Michael Gamel-McCormick, Teresa Danso-Danquah, Mat McCollough, Bob Kafka, David Carey, Helena Berger, Adreenah “Dreezy” Wynn, Jalyn Radziminski, Ra Malika Imhotep, Shayla Gaither, Tolu Adedoja, Jon Monger, Caitlin Hodgkins, Mark Martinez, and Rep. Tony Coelho.

Each participant received a certificate from AAPD and American University. Congrats to our 2020 class, we look forward to seeing you next year in-person! Interested in participating in the AAPD Summer Internship Program and Disability Advocacy Certificate Program? Applications for 2021 will launch in Sept. 2020. The #MEClassic has surpassed $2.5 MILLION in giving in support of charitable organizations in Gwinnett County and the greater metro Atlanta area.

“Although we were unable to hold the Mitsubishi Electric Classic this year, we remain dedicated to the community and charities supported through the tournament,” said Kent Hora, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. “To have the opportunity to give back in a significant way is extremely meaningful to everyone at Mitsubishi Electric, especially now as we strive to support our communities and one another through this uncertain time.”

Project SEARCH West Virginia

Thanks for the shout out Project SEARCH West Virginia! We are proud to support the continued replication efforts to bring Project SEARCH opportunities and competitive employment to youth with disabilities! #MPWRpossible #itmatterstoME

In 15 days, the first Project SEARCH program in West Virginia will launch at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

As we countdown the days, we will highlight our partner agencies and key players who have been critical in getting our program off the ground.

We wouldn't be where we are without the grant that we received from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF). The MEAF has an ultimate goal to make Project SEARCH available to every young person with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who dreams of competitive employment and maximal independence. They established the grant project to represent an important milestone towards achieving that goal by bringing the Project SEARCH program model to all of the 50 United States.

To reach this goal, they worked to increase the number of Project SEARCH sites in companies representing STEM industries—an industry sector in which people with IDD are underrepresented, and which is experiencing job growth that is predicted to continue for the foreseeable future.

We are a recipient of the grant to help them meet their short term goal of implementing a Project SEARCH site in one of the remaining states that does not have Project SEARCH. WVUMedicine is thrilled to bring Project SEARCH to West Virginia and are grateful for the grant support that they have provided.

For more information on the MEAF grant process, check out their website at: https://us.mitsubishielectric.com/en/about/local/csr/meaf/grant/index.html

Measuring Impact through SROI (Social Return On Investment)
Blue Star Recyclers is a Colorado-based social enterprise founded in 2009 with a mission of employing people with disabilities through an electronics recycling enterprise. This year we open new operations on the Western Slope, and would like to share about our primary deliverable - SROI (Social Return on Investment), which is a significant economic impact produced when our customers recycle with Blue Star and other social enterprises. We will show precisely how to produce and measure SROI, and how commercial, institutional, municipal, and residential buyers can leverage their purchasing power to produce SROI every time they purchase goods and services.

Register for this free session at https://westslopestartupweek.com/

All sessions at West Slope Startup Week 2020 will be recorded. By joining the session, you agree to be part of the recording.

Awesome event the elite team. Thanks for helping the environment and supporting disability employment opportunities at Blue Star Recyclers! #MPWRpossible #itmatterstoME

On Saturday, July 18, Blue Star Recyclers helped a very special Re/Max Elite Team Realtor say “thank you” to her clients and their friends and neighbors by participating in a little recycling event that went rogue!

Jeanne Guischard expected only 50-80 people would stop by to recycle their unwanted electronics, have their documents shredded, and donate food. The event was supposed to last from 11am-2pm, but by 11:45 we filled one large truck and had to return to the warehouse to unload and return. Within the three hours over $22,000 pounds of electronics were collected for e-Stewards certified recycling at Blue Star Recyclers.

Not only did Ms. Guischard host the event, she paid all recycling fees for the participants. While she never expected to have over 200 people show up, she was happy to support responsible recycling in our community. Her generous gift produced multiple positive impacts for our community - including the reduction of over 30,000 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions and $1,800 in taxpayer savings from employment hours for Blue Star employees with disabilities.

Thank you, Jeanne, a SUPER Re/Max Elite Team Realtor!

General information

The idea to establish a foundation began in 1989, when a group of Mitsubishi Electric executives decided that, after 20 years of doing business in the US, it was time to give back to the community. The 15 executives each put $100 on the table toward the foundation. By February 1991, that $1500 had grown to a $15 million endowment through contributions from the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan and its US subsidiaries, and the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation was launched. The Foundation's national mission of serving young people with disabilities has not changed over the years, and its priorities remain independence, productivity, and community inclusion. More than $9 million have been invested in organizations ranging from the American Foundation for the Blind to the Girl Scouts of the USA. MEAF invests in National Grant projects that promote the full inclusion of youth of all abilities in the areas of education, career preparation, recreation, volunteering and the arts. The Foundation also matches the donations of Mitsubishi Electric companies and their employees through Company Grant programs helping to support youth in the communities where our employees live and work. While it is impossible to precisely measure the human impact of these investments, we estimate they have helped thousands of children to live fuller, more productive lives. Numbers count, and multiplier effects are an important consideration in making grant decisions. But the Foundation also focuses on the individual and the value of each person's life. In the spirit of the Starfish story, we seek to make a difference, one starfish at a time.

Today, Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) is celebrating Child Abuse Prevention Month! #wearblueday2020 to support Prevent Child Abuse America, because #itmatterstoME
I am disabled. For this reason, I've been unemployed for the last 24 years. I have an intense, desire to be a productive member of society. I also have another negative constraint, I'm 62 years old. I'm facing the negative opinions of a disability as well as that of older adults. As I mentioned, I have an insatiable drive to work, my disability is under good control and I'm reasonably well educated. I posses a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Auburn University with a major in Transportation and a minor in Management. I have also completed a considerable amount of work towards a Master of Science degree. I have worked in dispatch, sales and operations in the motor carrier industry My last job was with the U.S. Postal Service sorting mail. I worked hard at all of these jobs. I attempted to do the work of two. I realized I should have paced myself, working to achieve higher productivity over a period of time. I am here asking if anyone may know of someone with an open heart and mind who is willing to give me an opportunity to reenter the workforce.
Thank you for your help in sponsoring the 2018 National Council for Independent Living (NCIL) Conference. Your company makes a difference in the lives of Americans with disabilities!
