Giana, one of our incredible young leaders from the EmpowHer Camp Class of 2023 was recently interviewed by 3 different reporters after news got out about Giana's advocacy work to get evacuation chairs for her school.

In an interview with News10, Giana shared, “It was hard because in the middle school, there was a safe room, which is just the music room, so it’s not really fireproof, and in the high school, I have to wait in the stairwell, which is like the area of refuge but it’s hard seeing everyone else go outside... Every person needs to feel safe during emergencies." We couldn't agree more with Giana and we can't how she continues to change the game for students with disabilities in an emergency. MEAF is proud to support Disability EmpowHer Network’s EmpowHer Camp and mentoring program to empower young leaders like Keira, with the support of remarkable mentors like Jo-Jo.

Happy Mentoring Monday!
During EmpowHer Camp this last August, each of our incredible Young Leaders was matched with a mentor, and today we are sharing one of those matches. Meet Keira and Jo-Jo!
Keira and Jo-Jo met at EmpowHer Camp this past summer in the Adirondacks The pair connected over their shared musical interests and humor. Over the next year, Keira will be completing an emergency preparedness project in her local community with Jo-Jo's help. For her project, Keira will be working to make shelters wheelchair accessible and create comfort kits for the shelters. We cannot wait to see what incredible things these two do together.

Today, Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) is celebrating Child Abuse Prevention Month! to support Prevent Child Abuse America, because
I am disabled. For this reason, I've been unemployed for the last 24 years. I have an intense, desire to be a productive member of society. I also have another negative constraint, I'm 62 years old. I'm facing the negative opinions of a disability as well as that of older adults. As I mentioned, I have an insatiable drive to work, my disability is under good control and I'm reasonably well educated. I posses a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Auburn University with a major in Transportation and a minor in Management. I have also completed a considerable amount of work towards a Master of Science degree. I have worked in dispatch, sales and operations in the motor carrier industry My last job was with the U.S. Postal Service sorting mail. I worked hard at all of these jobs. I attempted to do the work of two. I realized I should have paced myself, working to achieve higher productivity over a period of time. I am here asking if anyone may know of someone with an open heart and mind who is willing to give me an opportunity to reenter the workforce.
Thank you for your help in sponsoring the 2018 National Council for Independent Living (NCIL) Conference. Your company makes a difference in the lives of Americans with disabilities!
