Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF)

Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) The Foundation provides national grants to projects and organizations throughout the United States that are focused on the full inclusion of young people with disabilities in society
The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) is a small foundation with a big mission: To help make Changes for the Better for the one-out-of-five Americans of student age who have physical, mental, or learning disabilities. The Foundation's impact is intended to be as broad and lasting as possible to serve the largest number of young people with disabilities. But we also focus on the individual, on the small changes for the better that can make a big difference in people's lives...

Blue Star Recyclers

Check out this documentary by Matt Getze featuring Blue Star Recyclers and other disability employers in Colorado! Thank you Colorado Film Commission for raising awareness about the capabilities of people with disabilities! #MPWRpossible #itmatterstoME

Today we received a note from the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media to share an important film their office produced along with the Lieutenant Governor, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and Colorado Springs-based filmmaker Matt Getze.

In the spring of 2019, the Lieutenant Governor convened a meeting to discuss new ways to educate Coloradans to the benefits of employing people with disabilities. At the time, Colorado unemployment hovered around 3%, while roughly 70% of Coloradans with disabilities were unemployed.

The result is a half-hour documentary that captures the challenges, successes, and passion of Coloradans across the state working with disabilities. Follow the stories of four individuals, including our very own Tom Moloney, whose unique skills allow him to lead a team at Blue Star Recyclers.

This is an important film to gain a deeper understanding of work’s untapped resource: Coloradans with disabilities. The film will air Thursday, July 2 at 8:30PM on Rocky Mountain PBS. Please encourage your community to tune in for this important film. Until then please view this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWBALl_YA3k&feature=youtu.be

Bridges From School to Work

Congratulations Jamieson on being named the Bridges From School to Work 2020 Stephen G. Marriott Youth Achievement Honoree! #itmatterstoME #MPWRpossible

As we move into the middle of June, we are reaching the date that would have been our 30th Anniversary Gala in Washington DC. We are disappointed we can’t see you in person next week, but no one is more disappointed than Jamieson Holloway.

Jamieson is our 2020 Stephen G. Marriott Youth Achievement Honoree and, he was to have been center stage at the Gala on June 16. While we can’t hear from Jamieson in a live setting, we asked if he would share the speech he would have delivered in person, via Zoom. Please take a few minutes to hear from Jamieson, a most remarkable young man. Thank you for making his story, and thousands of others, possible.

To learn about how you can help support more youth like Jamieson, please visit https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/2020bridgesgala.

Thank you Rotary International clubs for supporting the Blue Star Recyclers’ Buffalo Grove, IL location with www.ezelectronicsrecycling.com services!

Today was a big day for our recycling operations in Chicagoland.

After almost a year of collaborative work between Blue Star Recyclers and Rotary District 6440 clubs, today we launched a new service called EZ Electronics Recycling, which provides at home pick up service for residents. Now Chicago NW suburban residents can receive Blue Star's certified electronics recycling service at their doorstep.

Seven Rotary clubs donated funds to help Blue Star purchase a new van to launch the service, including Glenview Sunrise, Dundee, Buffalo Grove, Barrington Breakfast, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, and Long Grove/Kildeer/Hawthorn Woods.

Special thank go to Suzanne Lyhus with the Glenview Sunrise Rotary Club, who was instrumental in coordinating Rotary's involvement in the project. We also wish to thank current Rotary District 6440 Governor Suzanne Gibson and incoming District 6440 Governor Lyle Staub, who actively supported the project within their districts and respective clubs.

"Millions of people are now teleworking as offices have closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Project SEARCH graduate Shannon Michuda is one of those workers. After graduating from the program last June, she was hired to work at the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City, Missouri, as a batching clerk. This was a fantastic opportunity with good pay and benefits. From the beginning, she thrived in her role and loved her job."

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to donate 100 Million Yen to support #covid19 relief efforts. #itmatterstoME

To help fight against #COVID19, Mitsubishi Electric will donate a total of 100 million yen (approximately US$ 930,000) to support the activities of medical personnel and children affected by temporary school closures. We also plan to donate medical masks (about 100,000 pieces) and other goods to medical institutions, and manufacture face shields in-house to provide to society.

We will also coordinate a matching gift program in Japan through the Mitsubishi Electric SOCIO-ROOTS Fund. Donations from employees will be matched by the company through this charitable undertaking.

We express our deepest sympathies to those affected by the Spread of COVID-19, and extend a heartfelt thank you to the healthcare professionals, and all those on the front lines working to protect communities and helping those in need.

General information

The idea to establish a foundation began in 1989, when a group of Mitsubishi Electric executives decided that, after 20 years of doing business in the US, it was time to give back to the community. The 15 executives each put $100 on the table toward the foundation. By February 1991, that $1500 had grown to a $15 million endowment through contributions from the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan and its US subsidiaries, and the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation was launched. The Foundation's national mission of serving young people with disabilities has not changed over the years, and its priorities remain independence, productivity, and community inclusion. More than $9 million have been invested in organizations ranging from the American Foundation for the Blind to the Girl Scouts of the USA. MEAF invests in National Grant projects that promote the full inclusion of youth of all abilities in the areas of education, career preparation, recreation, volunteering and the arts. The Foundation also matches the donations of Mitsubishi Electric companies and their employees through Company Grant programs helping to support youth in the communities where our employees live and work. While it is impossible to precisely measure the human impact of these investments, we estimate they have helped thousands of children to live fuller, more productive lives. Numbers count, and multiplier effects are an important consideration in making grant decisions. But the Foundation also focuses on the individual and the value of each person's life. In the spirit of the Starfish story, we seek to make a difference, one starfish at a time.

I am disabled. For this reason, I've been unemployed for the last 24 years. I have an intense, desire to be a productive member of society. I also have another negative constraint, I'm 62 years old. I'm facing the negative opinions of a disability as well as that of older adults. As I mentioned, I have an insatiable drive to work, my disability is under good control and I'm reasonably well educated. I posses a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Auburn University with a major in Transportation and a minor in Management. I have also completed a considerable amount of work towards a Master of Science degree. I have worked in dispatch, sales and operations in the motor carrier industry My last job was with the U.S. Postal Service sorting mail. I worked hard at all of these jobs. I attempted to do the work of two. I realized I should have paced myself, working to achieve higher productivity over a period of time. I am here asking if anyone may know of someone with an open heart and mind who is willing to give me an opportunity to reenter the workforce.
Thank you for your help in sponsoring the 2018 National Council for Independent Living (NCIL) Conference. Your company makes a difference in the lives of Americans with disabilities!
