Our small tanker (Tanker 43) is progressing through its remount process!

Over the past couple of weeks, crews have completely inspected the entire tank, fixed any issues found, and removed all of the old lighting and wiring. Work is now underway to mount the new pump, completely rewire the entire body, and install the tank body onto the new chassis.

When complete, this truck will still carry 2000 gallons of water, but also include a 1250 gallon per minute pump and cross-lays for fire hoses. The new truck will also have an additional 100 horsepower over our previous (33 year old) chassis, as well as all LED lighting.

-Posey Township VFD Responds to two fires within hours of each other.-

Just before 1:00 PM this afternoon, Posey Township VFD was dispatched to assist Morristown VFD on a vehicle fire near a structure. While enroute, the call was upgraded to a vehicle fire with structure involvement. Posey Township personnel arrived on scene and assisted with fire suppression and overhaul. Additional assistance was provided by Fountaintown VFD and Rushville Township VFD.

At approximately 4:40 PM, Posey Township VFD was dispatched to a residential trailer fire in Arlington. Crews arrived to find a trailer with heavy fire showing. Personnel quickly brought the fire under control utilizing three handlines from Engine 42, while Tanker 41 supplied water via relay pumping operations. Additional assistance was requested from Rushville City Fire Department EMS, Rushville Township Volunteer Fire Department, Manilla Community Volunteer Fire Department, and Morristown Volunteer Fire Department .

In addition to our tornado siren project, our fire department has another project to announce! Today our small tanker (known to us as Tanker 43), was delivered to Summit Fire Apparatus in Kentucky. While at Summit, our stainless steel tanker body will undergo modifications and be remounted to a brand new 2026 Freightliner chassis. In addition to the new chassis, our tanker will also be getting a new 1250 gallon per minute pump added to it. When the “new” Tanker 43 returns, we will have a basically brand new tanker with increased capabilities. We will share additional photos when the truck is completed!

We would like to thank Rushshelby Energy for their assistance in taking down our old tornado siren today. Their crew’s help was greatly appreciated!

This siren—believed to be over 70 years old—has been with our department since the 1950s and was originally mounted behind our first fire station (see second photo). When the current station was built, it was relocated and remounted. Until now, it has never been connected to county dispatch for remote operation and required personnel to respond to the station to operate it. As a result, this siren has not operated consistently during weather warnings for many years.

In 2009, the department was awarded a grant to install the electronic tornado siren currently located behind the Arlington Post Office. That siren is remotely controlled by dispatch and remains in service.

The original siren will now be sent out for evaluation and possible refurbishment. The goal is to have it restored, remounted, and upgraded with remote activation capability through dispatch.

Reminder: Tornado sirens are designed as outdoor warning systems only to alert those who are outside to seek shelter. They are not intended to be relied upon as an indoor warning method and most likely cannot be heard inside structures. When inclement weather approaches, the best source of information is a weather radio or local media.
