Happy ADA Anniversary! Today, we celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark civil rights law expanded access, opportunity, and protections for millions of Americans with disabilities.

One of the most powerful moments leading to its passage came just months earlier during the Capitol Crawl, when disability rights activists left their wheelchairs and mobility aids and climbed the Capitol steps to show the barriers they faced every day. “Nothing About Us Without Us!”

The same spirit that fueled the 504 Sit-In, where disability advocates fought for their right to be included in decisions affecting their lives, was echoed in the Deaf President Now (DPN) Movement of 1988. Students, faculty, staff, and supporters at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC united around a simple but powerful belief: Deaf students deserved Deaf leadership. Their successful advocacy led to the appointment of Gallaudet's first Deaf president and became a defining moment for representation, self-determination, and disability rights.

Today, DPN reminds us that true inclusion means ensuring people with disabilities are not only present but leading, shaping, and making decisions within their communities.
