The Arlington City Council recently committed to helping acquire needed funds to purchase a second set of firefighting gear for all Arlington Firefighters.

The expenditure is an investment in firefighter health and safety and is designed to ensure that 375 Arlington firefighters have a second set of firefighting gear. The City Council approved $325,000 for FY2021,the first year of a three year phased process that will provide all Arlington Firefighters with a second set of firefighting gear. The City Council is aware of the hazards firefighters face from firefighting contaminant exposures, and this important step is an effort to reduce firefighter health and safety risks.

The AFD currently provides firefighters with annual physicals, additional firefighting hoods, decontamination and personal hygiene procedures, gear extractor cleaning units at fire stations along with no tobacco and post exposure reporting requirements. The new gear purchase plan is the result of a collaborative effort involving the City Manager, the City Council, the Arlington Professional Fire Fighters Association and Fire Department leadership.

“Our firefighters appreciate the actions our Mayor, Council, City Manager Trey Yelverton and Arlington Fire Department Administration have taken in their commitment to purchase this critical equipment and promote our fight against these cancers before they can impact any more of our firefighters.” -David Crow, President, Arlington Professional Fire Fighters.

“Prior to this program’s approval, the Arlington Fire Department had instituted multiple cancer- limiting initiatives but a second set of firefighting gear was still an on-going goal for the Department. This gear purchase furthers the Department’s focus on adhering to national fire service best practice standards for preventing firefighter cancer. We very much appreciate the partnership in this vitally important effort!” -Don Crowson, Fire Chief/Director of Emergency Management.

FWFD Engineer Steve Collins lost his battle with Occupational Cancer last Sunday. In addition to his many years of service on the front lines, Steve served in the Cancer Focus Group of the Fort Worth Fire Service Resource Network and helped organize the 2019 Cancer Symposium. We will keep Steve’s family and friends in our thoughts and prayers. His family asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Fort Worth Fire Service Resource Network.

Your Fort Worth Fire Department continues to mourn the loss of Engineer Steve Collins. We want to thank you for your outpouring of thoughts and prayers over the past few days.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there is limited capacity for attendance at the services tomorrow (10/10). At the request of the family, the services will be live streamed to allow loved ones, friends, coworkers and the community the chance to celebrate Steve's life.

Below is a schedule of the three separate events that will be live-streamed on our page. We thank you for your continued support.

Your Arlington Professional Fire Fighters will be sharing information over the next few days to educate everyone about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen.

Did you know?

Yesterday some of your Arlington Professional Fire Fighters completed their second 24 hour operational period fighting wild fires in California.

Their duties as part of the TIFMAS team deployment include saw work, mop-up, and patrolling for hotspots in an 8 mile stretch of land.

Although fire control and suppression is their main responsibility, your Arlington Professional Fire Fighters filled up water troughs for livestock that had been left behind. #apff1329

Arlington Professional Firefighters Charitable Fund

Today is North Texas Giving Day and the APFF Charitable Fund is taking part. Your donations will go towards the Fund’s mission to help the community, other charitable organizations, and public servants of Arlington.

The APFF Charitable Fund has co-hosted coat drives, toy drives, and other events to benefit organizations such Mission Arlington, and the Arlington Life Shelter. The Fund has provided financial assistance to fire fighters who have suffered losses from fires or natural disaster, or the death of a family member.

When a fire fighter was injured in training he required surgery from an out of state specialist. His insurance only paid for his travel expenses. The APFF Charitable Fund provided funds to allow his wife and children to travel so that they could be by his side for the surgery and subsequent recovery.

If you would like to donate, here is the link.

Today we remember the terrible events of September 11, 2001.

We remember those who were murdered at the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and in a field near Shanksville, PA.

We remember the hundreds of acts of heroism performed that day by first responders and by members of the public.

We remember the families who unknowingly said their last good-bye to a loved one thinking it would be just another day.

We remember the children who grew up without a parent.

We remember the thousands of people who have died from cancer in the years following the attacks from exposure to toxic chemicals in the dust at Ground Zero.

We remember how the whole country came together in grief; unified and standing strong.

We will never forget.

Raul H Gonzalez for Arlington City Council

It is no secret that this has been a hard year. The COVID 19 situation has created serious budget complexities and other challenges for our great city. With over 30 years of business management experience, I have a history of successfully handling complex fiscal issues. Additionally, I've helped MISD achieve the highest ranking for financial integrity in Texas each year since records have been kept. I promise to be a critical thinker on the council, looking at all sides of each issue brought before me, and will always seek transparency and integrity in our operations. #raulhgonzalezforarlington

Today is the 15th anniversary of the death of Apparatus Operator Richard G. Hosford Jr, ID Number 234. Rick served the Arlington Fire Department for 22 years.

Rick had an interesting career. He was a professional actor, performing in plays and being cast in small parts in movies, before joining the U.S. Army. In 1982 he was honorably discharged from the Army as a Captain. The following year he joined the AFD.

Firefighting ran in the Hosford family: Rick’s grandfather and one of his brothers were firefighters.

On Thursday September 1st, 2005, Rick was driving to work at Fire Station 13 when another vehicle crossed over the center lane and struck Rick’s car, killing him.

We remember our fallen brother and our thoughts are with his family.

Edit: Rick's daughter has kindly shared some pictures of her father with us.

For 66 years the IAFF has partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to help those with diseases of the nervous system and muscular system by funding research, providing medical and community services and educating health professionals and the general public.

Your Arlington Professional Fire Fighters are usually out on the streets collecting donations but COVID-19 has made it nearly impossible to collect funds in this traditional way. This year the MDA is having their first ever “virtual" Fill The Boot Campaign.

You can click here: https://filltheboot.donordrive.com/participant/ArlingtonL1329 to donate or use the QR Code.

Announcing some Thanksgiving Cheer – and you’re invited! All through town, Thanksgiving decorations are being donned, and Christmas too. For those with family and friends, it is a happy time with families coming together to celebrate family traditions. For some people, however, the holidays are depressing. Maybe you have been isolated from your family for one reason or another. Or this year has been financially difficult and it just isn’t feasible to celebrate Thanksgiving. Or you have just moved and not located your kitchen yet! For some, fires changed their lives and are making it difficult… Or maybe you are single again from divorce or death or a couple whose children are not in the home and can’t come back for the holidays, and can’t bring themselves to cook for two! Whatever your reason, we would like to open our home and hearts and ask you to join us for a Common Table Thanksgiving Dinner, along with a day of celebration of our family traditions. It starts with breakfast and lunch preparations starting. We cook one Turkey the day before and the second one on Thanksgiving so there is always plenty of turkey meat. While each person is preparing their dishes, the family gathers to watch the Macy’s Holiday Parade, enjoying fresh homemade bread and muffins, and wassail or hot chocolate and making homemade Christmas decorations by a crackling fire. After the parade, we enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings! After lunch, we watch some of the old Christmas classics and some more recent Christmas follies. During the movies, cookies, fudge and candy are made, enough for each to take some home with them. Then around 6:30 leftovers are pulled out and we have sandwiches and turkey soup we make ourselves. Then more movies or holiday specials! By 9:30-10:00 accompanied with many yawns, your hosts (us) will bid you farewell! If you want to bring a dish, let me know to avoid multiple like casseroles, and if your have plans but would like to drop off a dish or order food to be delivered, details can be provided. But the most important thing to bring is you. Our home is a safe place, and our main rule in our home is respectful listening, so come who you are and as you are and you will be welcomed with open arms and open hearts. If you would like to come and join us, message me here, directly on Facebook (Judi Wall Blatchley), email me at [email protected], text or call 828-582-0142. We are in Arlington Texas near Fort Worth. No matter where you celebrate, have a blessed holiday season. Judi and Renee Blatchley This post has been made public so feel free to share it where you think there may be someone who wants or needs to share a family for the holidays.

We at the Rowlett Firefighters Association would like to invite all your members, friends and family to participate in our 52 week gun raffle. Information is attached and any questions can be emailed to [email protected] or visit www.RowlettFirefighters.com for more details. Thanks and good luck!
If you read your City Email you will see where a member posted a message about the meeting with the City tomorrow about benefits and Civil Service. The message was very " all about me" and very detrimental to all the hard work members have devoted to insuring we have Civil Service guidelines. It also undermined the voice of the Citizens when they voted for Civil Service. Other senior members and myself stand to loose a sizable amount of earned benefits but are willing to give them up to insure Civil Service 143 is adopted 100% as written. This is a "concrete" foundation for every member and members in the future. I will not give in to threats or promises from the City. The Firefighters have worked hard, the Citizens have spoken and games are being played to undo everyone's hard work. I will be serving our Citizens in the Northwest corner tomorrow and will not be able to attend the meeting. Please voice my thoughts Brothers and Sisters.
Thank You for all you do. Blessings to you all. I know how dedicated Ronnie "Mac" was .So I do know how hard all of you work . Love each and every one. Even the younger ones I have not met. 😉
