Chief Henderson (D3407) recently welcomed our new Fire Apparatus Engineers Logan Deurloo, Robert Lain, and Dario Sanchez to the San Luis Obispo Unit following their graduation from the CAL FIRE Company Officer Academy in Redding.

The Company Officer Academy provides firefighters with intensive training in fire apparatus operations, including driving, pumping, and using fire engines to support fire suppression efforts.

Congratulations to Logan, Robert, and Dario on this accomplishment. We look forward to seeing them serve the communities of San Luis Obispo County!

This week, firefighters from across San Luis Obispo County are participating in live-fire acquired structure training in Arroyo Grande.

The training is coordinated by the Regionalized Fire Control Cadre, a partnership of instructors and firefighters from multiple fire agencies throughout the county. Because emergency incidents are routinely managed through mutual aid, firefighters must be able to work seamlessly together regardless of which department they represent.

These realistic live-fire scenarios allow crews to train side-by-side while practicing critical firefighting skills including size-up, tactical decision-making, communication, fire attack, firefighter survival, and rapid intervention techniques used to rescue firefighters in distress.

We also had the opportunity to welcome ACEO Kate Ballantyne and several members of our Headquarters office staff, who suited up in firefighting gear and experienced the live-fire training firsthand.

Training opportunities like this are rare and provide invaluable experience that helps firefighters improve coordination, efficiency, and safety on the fireground before the next real emergency occurs.

🚒 LIVE FIRE TRAINING NOTICE 🚒

CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo Unit along with surrounding agencies, will conduct live fire training exercises on Valley Road in Arroyo Grande from June 2 through June 5, 2026, with a complete burn down of the structure planned for late Friday afternoon.

This training provides firefighters the opportunity to train together in realistic live-fire conditions and practice critical skills.

Crews will conduct four ignitions daily, with five fire engines committed each day. Fire control and containment measures will remain in place throughout the training, and all burning will occur under approved permit, weather, and air quality conditions.

Community members may see smoke, flames, and fire engine activity during operational hours. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area when possible to help reduce congestion.

Residents with health sensitivities to smoke are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed during training periods.
