South Asian Network

South Asian Network A community-based organization dedicated to advancing the health, empowerment, and solidarity of pers SAN’s work is organized across three programmatic units.

Recognizing the rapid growth of the South Asian American community in Southern California and the inability of other organizations to address its issues meaningfully, community activists founded SAN in 1990. Through 25 years of outreach, education, service provision, and advocacy, SAN has established trust and credibility within the South Asian American community. The organization has successfully

addressed the very issues that typically divide South Asian immigrants - religion, nationality, language, gender and sexual orientation - recasting them as necessary elements of a progressive South Asian American community and a multi-ethnic Southern California. The AWAZ Voices Against Violence unit is committed to the health, safety and empowerment of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The Community Health Action Initiative (CHAI) works to ensure access to quality health care services. The Civil Rights Unit focuses on advocacy on issues related to citizenship and civic engagement. Together with the community, the SAN board and staff have created multilingual, culturally appropriate approaches to community outreach and education, direct service and policy advocacy in the focus areas of public health, violence prevention and intervention, immigration and civic engagement. Over the past decade, several thousand South Asian Americans in Southern California have participated in one or more of SAN’s diverse activities. SAN receives in-kind support from a network of about 50+ volunteers across its programmatic units in the form of pro-bono attorneys, law clerks and MSW interns.

Many of us grow up carrying responsibilities early, helping our families navigate systems, balancing expectations, caring for loved ones, or feeling pressure to always be strong.

Over time, that stress can show up in our bodies through exhaustion, anxiety, trouble sleeping, headaches, irritability, or feeling disconnected from ourselves.

The good news? Small acts of care can help your nervous system feel safer. Our EMH team has created this guide to help you better understand how stress affects the body and ways to support your well being!

Save this for later, and send it to someone who may need the reminder.

Today, we celebrate a major milestone: SB 995, the Masuma Khan Justice Act, has passed the California State Senate with unanimous bipartisan support.

This progress would not be possible without years of advocacy from impacted community members, organizers, and coalition partners who have continued to push for accountability and humane treatment in immigration detention facilities.

Thank you to , our coalition partners, , , and every community member who helped move this legislation forward.

SB 995 now advances to the State Assembly. We remain committed to ensuring that all people are treated with dignity and that facilities operating in California are held accountable to California standards.

For many South Asian families, conversations about voting don’t always happen at the dinner table.

Some of us grew up watching our parents work long hours, navigate language barriers, and focus on building a life for their families. Others may be the first in their family to vote, explain a ballot, or help a parent find a Vote Center.

But our voices matter.

The decisions made in our communities affect the things we rely on every day: healthcare, language access, schools, transportation, workers’ rights, and resources that help families thrive. That’s why voting is about more than casting a ballot. It’s about making sure our communities are seen, heard, and included.

This carousel covers important election dates, voter rights, and resources to help you feel informed and prepared.

Save this for later and share it with someone voting for the first time, a family member, or anyone who could use this information.

Hate is rising across California, and our communities are feeling it every day. The Stop the Hate program provides critical support for survivors to heal, stay safe, and rebuild their lives, but this funding is at risk.

We need action now.

Call and email your State Senator and Assemblymember by May 15 to support continued funding for Stop the Hate.

Everything you need to take action is in our bio, find your legislator and send your message today.

SAN AT THE MAY DAY MARCH 2026 🗣️

Today we took up space in the streets with thousands of others, raising our voices for workers’ dignity, justice, and power. ✊🏽

South Asian Network was proud to march alongside fellow organizations, friends, and community members in solidarity with workers across movements. From powerful speeches to the sound of dhol echoing through the crowd, the energy was loud, joyful, and unstoppable.

Grateful to be part of collective action that reminds us change is built together, in every step, every voice, and every presence.
