On May 28, 2026, the Arvada Police Department and Arvada Police Foundation proudly dedicated the Arvada Police Honor Garden, a permanent tribute to the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community.

This year’s annual memorial ceremony held special significance as the families of Officer Gordon Beesley and Officer Dillon Vakoff joined retired members of the Department and the Arvada Police Honor Guard to raise the Honor Garden’s U.S., Colorado, and Arvada flags for the first time.

The ceremony also featured a powerful tribute from Officer Vakoff’s former teammates in the 96th Bomb Squadron, based in Louisiana (). Two B-52 Stratofortress aircraft conducted a ceremonial flyover of the event under the callsigns DILON01 and DILON02 in honor of Officer Vakoff’s service and sacrifice.

Years in the making, the Honor Garden stands as a place of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude - honoring the legacy of our fallen officers while recognizing the commitment of those who continue to serve.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the many individuals, organizations, donors, community members, and partners whose support helped make this project a reality. Their generosity and commitment have created a lasting tribute that will honor Arvada’s fallen officers for generations to come.

Bovine breach in security over the weekend.

Meet Mabel. The hooved sprinter decided to cross the road near 72nd and Indiana St., and we sent two of our best city slickers to wrangle the hefty escapee. Thankfully, Mabel can spot rookie cowboys miles away and came along willingly as her owner was in the area to take custody.

Obviously, it is spring in Colorado, and animal life abounds. Please keep your eyes on the road and be on the lookout for would-be dumpster-diving bears.

Bear sightings in Arvada!

There has been an uptick in bear sightings these last few weeks, mostly west of Ward Road in Wheat Ridge and Arvada. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has been consulted. CPW advised that we would see more bear activity due to the drought. In the meantime, take your bird feeders down if there are sightings near you, don't leave your pets outside unsupervised, and make sure your trash cans are secured! Please continue to call in when you do see a bear so Animal Management Officers can respond out to the area!

We have been monitoring the activity, and the bear has not been seen in the area for a few days now.

This week, we honor National Police Week. Officer Dillon Vakoff's mother was kind enough to offer some words about her son this year.

“In September of 2022, my son, Arvada Police Officer Dillon Vakoff, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call. He died protecting an entire family, including children. Dillon was my son, he was a friend to so many, and he left this earth a hero.

Losing Dillon forever changed my life, and the lives of those who loved him, but it also revealed to me something deeper about those who wear the uniform every day. Behind every badge is a human being — a mother or father, a husband or wife, a son or daughter — and loved ones praying they make it home safely at the end of every shift.

Before becoming a police officer, Dillon served in the United States Air Force, where he learned and embraced the motto, "That others may live.” That spirit of sacrifice defined the way that he lived his life and the way he served his community. He understood the risks of his profession, but he believed deeply in his purpose to protect others and leave the world better than he found it.”

This week, we thank those officers and families who have sacrificed so much in the name of community safety.

Officer-involved shooting following domestic disturbance under investigation

ARVADA, Colo. — On Saturday, May 2, 2026, at approximately 7:02 a.m., Arvada Police officers were dispatched to an apartment at the Willow Green Townhomes located at 6989 Sheridan Blvd following a report of a disturbance involving an assault. Initial information indicated multiple individuals, including children, were inside the unit and that fi****ms were present.

Officers arrived on scene at approximately 7:11 a.m. and attempted to make contact with occupants. Officers observed evidence of a physical disturbance and concerns for the safety of those inside, officers made entry into the apartment under exigent circumstances.

Upon entry, officers encountered a person who had not been allowed to leave. Officers safely removed two women and a child from the residence. Officers were then informed that two adult male suspects remained inside and were believed to be armed.

Additional resources were requested, including assistance from the Westminster Police Department, which deployed a drone to assist with surveillance. During the incident, a male suspect was observed exiting a top-floor window onto the roof of the building while armed with a firearm, before returning inside.

At approximately 8:03 a.m., the suspect again exited onto the roof and retrieved a firearm. At that time, a Westminster officer monitoring the situation discharged their weapon, striking the armed suspect.

The suspect fell onto the roof. Due to the unknown situation inside the apartment and potential danger, emergency medical personnel were unable to immediately access him. A drone was used to monitor the suspect, who showed no signs of life.

The Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team responded and conducted a search of the apartment. No additional suspects were located inside. The suspect on the roof was later confirmed deceased at approximately 11:00 a.m.

Investigators recovered two fi****ms near the deceased suspect on the roof and an additional firearm inside the apartment.

This remains an active investigation. Arvada Police detectives are investigating the initially reported assault and other charges. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has assumed the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

No further information will be released at this time.
