Early Childhood children (age 3-5) have been screened for malnutrition at three more schools. Evidence of malnutrition continues to be recorded. The good news is that when parents realize the danger of malnutrition to their child's physical and mental development, most are taking steps to provide improved nutrition. Most schools tested for malnutrition have begun serving porridge.

This picture shows one of five 'Catch the Rain' projects that SCOPE and partners Safaricom/Mpesa Foundation and Rotary International have completed. We are excited to announce that there are six more 'Catch the Rain' projects scheduled!

The 'Catch the Rain' project is more than water! These project are providing income generating businesses; fish farming, greenhouse farming and drip irrigation for the school and its' community. Students are drinking clean water, avoiding water borne diseases and no longer have to fetch water from distant polluted streams!

Surveyed children birth to age 5 for malnutrition at Nyakungu Primary. The parents were extremely poor yet managed to contribute millett for daily porridge and feeding program. Nyakungu children had one of the lowest rates of malnutrition. Kudos for the school and parents for recognizing the need for good nutrition.

I arrived in Nairobi, 24 October in time for the election. Traveled to Kisii the next day and am nestled into the Sports Club, my home away from home. At the SCOPE office today. We are distributing wheelchairs in the morning and meeting in the afternoon to map out a program for helping youth start businesses: construction of greenhouses, mushroom houses and fish farms.

Thanks to the support of some generous donors, SCOPE has begun surveying to determine the extent of malnutrition in children 1-6 years of age. That's the period when children's immune system is developing. Children are at risk of physical development and brain development being stunted without proper nutrition. Six of seven schools surveyed had rates of malnutrition that exceeded 50%. The only school with a low rate was Nyanturago, which was also the only school with a feeding program.

Identifying undernourished children is a good first step. The real challenge is in making sure that children are fed the food, vitamins and nutrients that they need to prevent malnutrition. What would you do?
