Today will start out cold but quiet, with time to complete any last minute preparations for the storm. Snow is expected to begin mid to late afternoon across the area, with heavy sleet/snow through most of the overnight hours into Sunday. Freezing rain then becomes the main story, falling for most of Sunday until the storm passes by midnight Monday. Windy and cold conditions arrive Monday, with mountain upslope snow showers. Prepare for possible lengthy power outages, as very cold air stays in place all week.

State and local officials are monitoring a winter storm with increasing confidence of significant impacts from snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Hazardous travel and power outages are possible, with prolonged cold potentially complicating impacts. Residents are encouraged to prepare now and monitor official sources for updates.

Now is the time to get ready. Simple steps taken ahead of time can help keep you and your family safe:

Before the storm

-Change plans so you do not need to travel during or immediately after the storm.

-Have emergency water and non-perishable food on hand.

-Keep a flashlight with extra batteries available.

-Make sure smoke detectors are working and have a fire extinguisher you know how to use.

-Prepare a first aid kit, plus extra medications, prescriptions, and baby or medical supplies if needed.

-If using a generator or propane heater, place it outdoors and well away from doors and windows. Always follow manufacturer instructions to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

For your vehicle

-Top off your fuel.

-Have your vehicle winterized (battery, antifreeze, oil, wipers, and tires).

-Carry a winter storm kit, including blankets, extra clothes, high-calorie food, water, flashlight and batteries, ice scraper and brush, shovel, tow rope, jumper cables, and waterproof matches.

Buckingham County First Responders:

We are working with an instructor to bring rope operations training to Buckingham County in the spring of 2026. This VDFP course requires an online prerequisite—Technical Rescue Awareness—which can be completed on Cornerstone at the link below (sign-in required).

If rope rescue education is something you’re interested in, I strongly encourage you to complete this prerequisite now so you’ll be eligible to register once the course opens.
