As a music educator of 30 years I was aware of the importance of helping children find their voice. Over the years I was fortunate to observe students blossom as they discovered that one thing that made them shine and gave them hope for the future, a sense of purpose in this world.
After retiring I felt a need to revisit my purpose. A strong part of me kept searching for a way to bring the children back into my life. I was led to the work of a Guardian ad Litem, the voice for a child who needs to be heard. It was a perfect fit! My work as a GAL has allowed me to advocate for the children and young people I work with and to guide them towards a path that will help them thrive. It is an honor and privilege to be a GAL!

I chose to become a GAL because I want to help make a disadvantaged child's life the best it can possibly be. The innocent and helpless children that are in abuse and neglect situations deserve a voice and someone that will take the initiative and stand up for them.

My interest in becoming a GAL started over 30 years ago when former district administrator Lee Malpass spoke at a Kiwanis meeting. When I retired ten years ago, I was finally ready to join the team of volunteer advocates for children. There is nothing more rewarding than building relationships with children in foster care and making a difference in their lives.

I am a former foster parent who switched gears to now advocate for the best for kids in my community. I strive to make the world a better place one case at a time.

My journey to become a GAL began with tutoring children in a housing project and coming alongside a friend who was a foster parent. It was through those experiences that I saw real discrepancies in services that support children in need. I wanted to help in a more significant way, particularly for children removed from their families....and God led me here.

I choose to serve as a Guardian Ad Litem because I was fortunate to grow up in a home filled with love, stability, and strong support- blessings I recognize were not earned, but a blessing. I was also able to recognize that many children do not have that same foundation, though they are no less worthy. Serving as a Guardian Ad Litem allows me to extend the same advocacy, encouragement, and support to those children, helping ensure they have a voice and access to the opportunities they deserve, because they are just as special.

I am a GAL because children are precious gifts from God. Childhood is when we learn to love and trust if someone is there to comfort us in our pain, feed us when we are hungry and protect us from danger. Unfortunately, some children do not have this opportunity without intervention. Being a GAL gives me the opportunity to be a part of bringing these things back to a child. What great joy it brings!

I was given literature on Guardian Ad Litem which I read and laid aside. Over the next month or so there were small notices in the local paper repeatedly about Guardian Ad Litem needing volunteers. I asked God, "Are you trying to tell me something?" I already knew the answer. The year was 1999.
