Put your hay to work this fall and winter!

When feeding hay, consider placing feeders or hay in areas where soil fertility or forage quality is poor. The hay that is wasted, along with concentrated manure and urine around the feeding area, can return valuable nutrients to the soil.

This simple practice can help improve soil fertility, build organic matter, and improve future forage production—making your hay work double duty!

Fall is the best time to plant cool-season forages! 🌱Today, Blake planted ryegrass into the existing sod in the pasture here at the Ag Center. This pasture is a work in progress and the ryegrass will fill in the gaps where the fescue is thin until we are able to amend the soil to support overseeding fescue.

🌱🐄 Learning about agriculture in action!

Over the past two days, nearly 400 fourth graders from Asheboro City Schools visited the Randolph County, NC Agricultural Center for an exciting, hands-on field trip hosted by Randolph County Cooperative Extension, Randolph County 4-H, and Randolph County Soil and Water! Students rotated throughout around the Ag Center to learn about livestock, soil and water conservation, forestry, plant science, ag technology, nutrition, and more. 🌳🐓

We love helping the next generation discover where their food comes from and the important role agriculture plays in our everyday lives! A big thank-you to everyone who helped make these educational experiences possible! 🌾

Protect your hay and protect its nutrients!

Did you know hay can lose more nutrients from sitting directly on the ground than from being uncovered? Whenever possible, store hay off the ground using pallets, old tires, or other inexpensive materials.

☑️ Keep bales off the ground
☑️ Cover with a tarp when possible
☑️ Protect hay from rain, moisture, and sun

Hay exposed to the elements can develop mold and rot several inches into the bale, resulting in significant nutrient loss. Proper hay storage helps preserve forage quality, reduce waste, and decrease the amount of hay needed to meet your livestock’s nutritional needs.

A little extra protection now can save you hay—and money—later!

Randolph ECA (Extension & Community Association) traveled to Cary on October 9th. The day started with a guided tour of Downtown Cary Park. Dr Patrick Mc Millan, park horticulturist, focused on the diversity of the plantings and their hardiness in a semi urban zone. Dr Mc Millan is an award winning host, co creator, and writer for the nature program “ Expeditions with Patrick Mc Millan.” The program streams on PBS. The Cary Downtown Park has more visitors per square inch than any park in the USA. It features a dog park, an amphitheater, walking trails, and family friendly play areas. The day ended with great fellowship at Serendipity Deli. See the comment section to learn more about Randolph ECA and the Cary Downtown Park.
