120 years ago, Julie Wolfe purchased the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse for $6500. Much of the down payment was made from her own savings, and the property was fully in her name. She was married, had given birth to eight children, and was 46 years old when she began perhaps the biggest venture of her life. Julia ran the boardinghouse in some capacity until her death in 1945- she was 85 years old.

Thomas Wolfe famously wrote “you can’t go home again.” But perhaps what he meant, and something that Dolly Parton had figured out for herself when she said “I still close my eyes and go home — I can always draw from that,” is that Home never really leaves us. We simply carry facets of it with us: the people, the smells, the sounds, the songs, and the memories.

We certainly hope Dolly is home again… What a legend!

Truly a cultural icon to this and every state—her birthplace is merely a few mountaintops further west from here. Thanks for shining your light on all of us, Dolly. May you rest in peace.🌹
