What would you want future generations to know about life in 2026? ✉️⏳

As part of the America 250 commemoration, Buncombe County Public Libraries is creating a community time capsule—and we want to hear from you!

From June 1–August 31, patrons of all ages are invited to write a letter reflecting on life today, sharing hopes for the future, or making predictions for generations to come. Letter templates for kids, guided prompts, and open-ended responses will be available at library locations.

Letters will be preserved in Buncombe County Special Collections at Pack Memorial Library as part of this unique community project.

Participation is optional and open to all ages 💛

Plus, join us on Tuesday, June 30 at Pack Memorial Library for a day of America 250 programs including:

What happens when the future calls us to account? ⚖️🌱

Join us for The Court of Future Generations, a 20-minute courtroom-style climate play performed by youth ages 8–15 from Zig Zag ALC. In this imaginative performance, “The Machine” is put on trial—and the audience becomes the jury. Stay after for a talk-back with the performers and Asheville GreenWorks to continue the conversation.

Join us on June 8th at 5:00PM as authors Ren and Helen Davis discuss their latest book about how the work of photographers George Masa and Jim Thompson helped establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Land of Everlasting Hills details the lives and work of Masa and Thompson, both of whom were influential in the decade-long campaign to establish a national park and to protect the scenic beauty and rich diversity of the Great Smoky Mountains. In addition to the historical and biographical narrative—which includes more than thirty relevant photographs embedded within the text—the large-format book features a selection of photographic plates representing the exceptional images that Masa and Thompson created.

Malaprops will have books available for purchase during the program.
