Timon Salters and Antony Newell graduated from a 60 hour training that certifies them as a Community Health Worker Violence Prevention Professional.

Community-based Public health response to Violence (CPrV©) is a comprehensive violence prevention strategy that emphasizes community leadership in partnership with social service and government agencies.

It is based on the 2011-2016 CDC STRYVE youth violence prevention initiative as implemented in Portland, Oregon's Multnomah County Health Department. CPrV© is designed to strategically allow community knowledge and experience to guide its development and implementation, while also leveraging authentic government and multi-disciplinary support.

These kind of trainings help our staff have all the resources and knowledge to be able to help our community!

Over the past four years, Wendy Brooks has had to learn a painful skill: living with grief every single day. On the evening of April 12, 2022, her 27-year-old son, LaMichael Shawn Carter, was shot multiple times outside Brooks’ West Asheville home and succumbed to his wounds.

“No parents should ever bury their babies,” says Brooks, who discovered her son “belly down on the ground and already passed.” Years later, the case remains unsolved, and Brooks still works with detectives, searching for answers.

In the meantime, though, she says she’s “turned her pain into purpose” and now works as a violence prevention professional/community health worker for the SPARC Foundation, a nonprofit that provides education and support designed to keep people out of institutional care.
