Ashfield Historicsl Society just received around 25 19th century images - tin types, cabinet cards etc from the Howes-Williams-Jenkins-Dayton family. I can schedule a time for anyone interested to come in and view them. They are absolutely amazing!

Lots of local history this weekend!

After a successful first run last year, the Hilltown History Trail is back, with six museums opening their doors to transport visitors back in time. The tour, which is taking place Saturday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include museums in...

Roofing is nearly finished! I cut all 60 hemlock rafters, chiseled all the joinery, and covered the whole roof (about 20 square) with 1" rough cut pine decking. Mitch, our expert slate roofer has installed brand new slate on the front side, and salvaged slate from the original structure on the back side.

We recently purchased this original post card invitation to Nathan Williams' 80th Birthday gathering in 1909, thanks to a tip from a friend. Nathan WIlliams, son of Apollis & Annis (Smith) Williams, was born just after the house was completed, and he is pictured in this page's profile picture (top right, in the doorway, when he was about 40, in 1878). He returned to Spruce Corner in his later years after many challenging years in the midwest. Reading some of his story (in the photos below), certainly gives me perspective on how much easier we have it these days.

Day #2 of the carriage barn raising was another great success! A bit more wind today, but we had momentum! Last day with the crane, but all the plates, purlins, joists, and rafters, are up in the air! We are overjoyed and grateful for the incredible folks that brough their years of experience to bring this project to life!

The first of 5 bents was raised by hand a week ago, and now we are preparing the framing members for the next 4, which will be raised with a telescoping lift of some sort. Progress!

It’s about time for an update. After having to postpone the carriage barn project for a couple years due to the pandemic, our builder Will Elwell and I have been hard at work over the last couple months, preparing the sills, the first of which have been laid and anchored to the stone foundation by threaded rods. We have also ordered the windows, slate for the roof, and our logger and sawyer are waiting for the right weather to harvest and mill the remaining beams, joists, and rafters. It feels good to have momentum again.
