The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office can confirm that at approximately 4:34 pm today, our 9-1-1 Center received a call in regard to a shooting that had occurred in the 1700 Block of Dawes St. in Ashland, NE.

After negotiating on the phone with the caller and suspect in the incident, the suspect came outside unarmed and was taken into custody by Ashland Police Officers.

The suspect, Robert Haswell Jr.(31 y/o) was taken into custody for 1st Degree Murder and Use of a Deadly Weapon to commit a Felony and lodged at Saunders County Corrections.

The victim has been identified as Robert Haswell Sr. (67 y/o). He suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Ashland Police Dept, Nebraska State Patrol, and the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office are involved in the investigation. Ashland Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene.

Next of Kin have been notified. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this tragic incident.

The City and a group of volunteers will be working on painting the downtown light poles on Friday morning. While this is going on, the parking stalls on the north side of Silver Street will be blocked off.

A contractor has hit a City of Ashland water main that feeds the East side of Ashland, Iron Horse and some properties along Highway 6. We are working to get it repaired and water restored to everyone as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience!
