We're proud of our ongoing work with our amazing partners to make a healthier and safer environment in the Ashland Watershed, source of our drinking water. Still so much work to do, but it's so important to pause and celebrate what's been accomplished in the The Ashland Forest Resiliency Stewardship Project. Thanks to Janet Eastman and The Oregonian for featuring this important story!

Tribal fire crews use controlled burns and forest thinning techniques passed down for centuries, proving that "good fire" can help stop devastating wildfires before they start.

Ashland! This is important to understand what these conditions are and how they can lead to dangerous fires in our area...or an area you may be travelling in or to this summer and fall. Red Flags and especially Red Flag PDS days should be on your radar. They're definitely on ours here at the fire station!

Following our partners at ODF Southwest Oregon District, fire season restrictions begin inside the City of Ashland Oregon on Friday, May 15th. The biggest change for the public is a ban on open burning. As fire danger increases, restrictions on activities like gas-powered machinery start to kick in. Time to start checking off items on the ready list like w**d abatement, packing go bags, clearing defensible space, and making sure you're signed up for Jackson Alerts.

Ashland Fire & Rescue responded along with Ashland Oregon Police Department today to a vehicle crashed into a building on the SOU campus. A car crashed into Stevenson Union, rupturing a gas meter and injuring the driver. Firefighters extracted the driver and shut down the gas line. All students, workers, and faculty were evacuated from the building during this incident, which lasted from approximately 12:30 PM until a two truck removed the car a couple hours later. A fire crew and workers from Avista cleared the building for re-entry just after 2:00 PM. The exact cause of the incident is under investigation.

With temperatures forecast to hit the 90 degree mark tomorrow, it's feeling like fire season is not far away. That means it's time to get your w**ds and grass mowed. June 1st is the deadline set by Ashland Municipal Code, so plan to have your property cut by the deadline. Protect your buildings, your neighbors, and our community: Cut it short, keep it short!

How do I meet the code? See the requirements in the link below.

The W**d Abatement Program is underway, and it’s crucial to reduce fire risks in our community. Cutting grass and w**ds and removing flammable plants and debris near your home can greatly improve the chances of your property surviving wildfire.

During March and April, we hosted a crew from the Northwest Youth Corps, funded by the Oregon Conservation Corps to help communities in the state reduce their wildfire risk. The OCC was strongly supported by our own State Senator Jeff Golden in Senate Bill 762 back in 2021 and has helped young people attain work experience while benefitting communities and ecosystems across Oregon.

While working in Ashland, the crew accomplished a lot of work to help us prepare for fire season:
-Directly reduced risk around 80 homes, one school, and
several businesses
-Reduced fire exposure to an additional 57 buildings
-Thinned, chipped, and/or burned 14.5 acres of fuel in open
spaces

With only 3 crew members, that was a LOT of hard work done to make Ashland a safer place this summer! We're really grateful for this program and we're already looking for ways to bring them back to do more work in the fall...and beyond.
