Discover the fascinating world of monarch butterflies at Byers Woods tomorrow, August 21st, from 10 AM–12 PM! 🧡🦋

We’ll start with a few stories about monarchs, then learn a little more about what makes them special before we head out on a short exploration to see if we can spot any fluttering through the park. Along the way, we’ll learn how monarchs migrate thousands of miles, why milkweed is essential for their survival, and simple ways you can support their lifecycle right here in Ashland County!

This is a relaxed, family‑friendly nature program, no registration required, and anyone is welcome to join us for a morning of discovery and outdoor fun!🦋🐛

🌳 Stop by our Trailhead Table at Freer Field tomorrow morning🌳

Heading out for a walk at Freer Field this Wednesday? Come visit our table between 9- 11 a.m. at the trailhead near the office building at 1301 Park Street. We’ll be set up right at the entrance with snacks and hydration to fuel you!

While you’re there, you can also explore:
• Upcoming programs & events happening across the district
• How to become a supporter or Friend of the Ashland County Park District
• General information about all 20 of our parks, trails, habitats, and ongoing projects

Whether you’re a regular visitor or discovering our parks for the first time, we’d love to chat, answer questions, and help you get connected with everything happening across Ashland County’s natural spaces!

Ashland County Park District is honored to host the 2026 Veterans Appreciation Day at Freer Field this Saturday, August 8th.

The World War II, Korean, and Vietnam traveling war memorials will each be on display in what may be the first gathering of the trio at the same place and time at Freer Field from Aug. 6–9.

These powerful displays honor generations of American service members and lead into Veterans Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 8.

We invite the community to visit, reflect, and help us honor our nation’s heroes.

Want to join the es**rt? A volunteer es**rt will bring the memorials from Mansfield to Ashland on Thursday, August 6.

📍 Meet at the Ohio State Reformatory
🕙 Gather at 10 AM — depart at 11 AM

If you prefer, you can simply line Claremont, Main, and Center with flags to welcome the memorials into town.

A few weeks ago, our staff visited one of our properties to reclaim an old family cemetery belonging to the Sutherland family. This historic site has been located on Ashland County Park District property for many years, but the oldest headstone dates back to 1842.

As you can see, the cemetery was heavily overgrown. Our staff spent the entire day carefully restoring the space and bringing it back to a respectful condition. While the 1842 stone is the oldest marker, the stunning White Oak standing at the back of the cemetery is even older. The age has been estimated at around 305 years.

Ashland County Park District will continue to share updates as this story develops.
