K9 Ajax got in some training on shift the other day thanks to Officer Bailey who is on field training and was curious about the bite suit.

A building search scenario at training (under the watchful eye of Trainer Mike Oriely) when the “bad guy” has went out onto a roof through a window. The window is covered and only cracked open about a inch. As you can see it doesn’t take K9 Ajax to sniff out the exact location.

Near the end of today’s 7 to 3 shift Ashland police took a report of a missing nonverbal autistic adult in the Ashland Town Forest. She had become lost while walking with her father on a nature hike. Sgt Alberini and K9 Ajax responded to the scene. After being briefed on previous locations Sergeant Alberini readied K9 Ajax for a person track. Within 15 minutes K9 Ajax located the missing person and she was successfully reunited with her father. This demonstrates how important a properly trained canine unit is for any local police department. With the weather conditions of the oncoming night it was crucial to locate this person before nightfall. Again we are lucky to have Ajax as an asset for our Police Department

Ajax was just called in to track a teenager that fled after a section 12 was issued. K9 Ajax quickly acquired the track and successfully found the person and ended the search. Another find for him, he is turning out to be a great asset to the town. He was rewarded with a nice steak when we got home.

This morning at approximately 11:50 am, Ashland Police Officers were dispatched to Route 126 for a report of a male subject acting erratically, walking in and out of traffic. Upon arrival officers encountered the subject in front of Dairy Queen. The subject immediately became combative with the officers and began physically assaulting them. It required several more officers to try and physically restrain the subject. Sgt. Alberini arrived on scene and deployed his K9 Ajax on a lead. Upon seeing the presence of K9 Ajax, the subject immediately surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

It is believed that the subject was under the influence of an unknown substance. The subject was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation and will be summonsed into court on pending charges including Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

Due to the great restraint shown by our responding officers, there were no reported injuries to the subject or Police Officers.

This incident serves as another reminder that our First Responders are still here serving and protecting the Ashland community every day. Despite the current pandemic, we don’t get to stay home.

Many thanks to Ashland Fire Department and Brewster Ambulance Service for their assistance today.

On the one week anniversary of K9 Dax’s retirement K9 Ajax had his first find! He was called to Natick to search for a person in mental distress. K9 Ajax tracked from the home to a wooded area. After a lengthy search in unfavorable terrain K9 Ajax located the person buried in leaves on a steep bank. K9 Ajax’s abilities made sure this person was not exposed to the elements overnight.
