Rescue Training
On Monday, AVFC volunteers partnered with staff from Hanover County Fire-EMS Department at Chickahominy Volunteer Fire Department - Hanover County Fire/EMS Station 10 to independently staff Engine and Rescue 410. During the shift, firefighters conducted hands-on training, sharpening the skills needed to safely and efficiently remove patients from damaged vehicles.

A special thank you to Mathews Towing and Recovery for helping facilitate a great training day!

A rescue company in the fire service is a specialized unit trained and equipped to handle technical rescues, such as vehicle extrication. They respond to complex emergencies requiring advanced tools, skills, and coordination beyond standard firefighting operations.

We’re proud of the dedication our personnel show in continually improving their abilities to serve and protect our community.

Touch-a-Truck at Ashland Train Day!

AVFC had a great time this past Saturday being part of Ashland Train Day and giving the community a chance to get up close with our fire apparatus! Kids (and plenty of adults!) enjoyed climbing aboard, exploring the trucks, and meeting our firefighters.

Events like this are a great way to connect with our community, answer questions, and maybe even inspire the next generation of first responders. AVFC is grateful that Hanover County Fire-EMS Department provided a reserve ladder truck since ours was unavailable!

Thank you to everyone who came out to see us—we loved being part of such a fun day!

Spencer credits the strong relationships he found at AVFC with setting the foundation for his service in the community.

On Friday, Hanover County Fire-EMS Department staff and AVFC volunteers completed training which focused on reviewing the critical tools used during vehicle accident response. From hydraulic cutters and spreaders to stabilization equipment and other tools, our team worked hands-on to ensure every piece of equipment is used safely, efficiently, and with purpose.

This was the first night in a series of training that will review tools, techniques, and skills used on motor vehicle accidents. While training, a volunteer crew staffed Truck 401 and a volunteer officer helped fill a role on Engine 401 to keep the unit in service.

Knowing the tools is just as important as knowing the technique—because in real emergencies, precision and speed make all the difference.

We train with what we use, so we’re ready for whatever comes our way. Are you interested in training with us? Email [email protected] to learn more.

Play Ball!

This past Saturday, AVFC was proud to attend the opening day for Ashland Little League! Volunteer members and Hanover County Fire-EMS Department firefighters displayed the American Flag for the national anthem, led a parade of future baseball stars to the field complex in Ashland, and helped throw a ceremonial first pitch!

It was great interacting with so many players and their families, as well as Hanover Board of Supervisors member Sue Dibble, Ashland Town Mayor Steve Trivett, Vice Mayor Daniel McGraw, and Council Member Pamela Sopall.

Advanced Skills!

Our company is proud to partner with Hanover County Fire-EMS Department who provides three career firefighters at our firehouse each day. These firefighters sometimes can provide emergency medical services at an advanced level, offering a high level of service to the community.

Pictured here are members on a recent call where advanced life support was provided. Our partners with LifeEvac landed nearby and transported the patient to the hospital.

If you’re interested in helping provide this important service, we are always accepting members! Email [email protected] to learn more.

AVFC reminds the community that they should install smoke alarms on every level and in bedrooms, testing them monthly and create/practice a home escape plan with two ways out.

If you’d like us to speak at your organization, contact us via email or call the station.

Training Tuesday
This past Friday, career firefighters from Hanover County Fire-EMS Department and our volunteers trained on skills used when arriving first to a building fire. Training included forcible entry, stretching hose lines, setting up the aerial device, and using the aerial master stream.

Firefighters train on a daily basis to respond to a wide range of emergencies. Fridays’ training reinforced how basic skills can save time, and possibly a life.

Did you know we have a 95 ft ladder to rescue people from a building ? Or a fire engine that can pump up to 2,000 gallons per minute of water?

Do you have questions about firefighter training or the operations of the fire company ? Email [email protected] to learn more.

AVFC is excited to have members participating in a Regional Volunteer Fire Academy with Hanover County Fire-EMS Department and Goochland County Fire-Rescue.

Recruits spent today showcasing their skills to family members at Goochlands’ fire training center. Firefighters’ Palmore and Willett attended on behalf of the company to support our recruits.

We look forward to celebrating their graduation in May! Keep up the hard work!
