Every mower I loan out, before it goes, I fill the gas tank, check the oil, inspect for issues, and start it up to make sure it will run, that it wasn't returned with a bent blade, and that there's no vibration for different reason, loose motor mount bolts for example.

I took a pretty hard fall yesterday, bruised up my ribs, banged up my right arm and took a bump on my noggin. I'm fine, just pretty sore. The main thing is that I won't be able to pull the pull cords to start. I'll do as much of the mower inspections as I can but it'll probably be a good idea if you are borrowing a mower the next couple of days just to go ahead and start it up here to make sure it doesn't have any issues instead of getting home with it and finding one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

***Just a little update, because so many folks concerned about videoing instead of putting out the fire. While I shot the short video, my 29 year old son ran to get the hose. Took us less than two minutes to put it out. It was a bad day. Maybe show a little kindness instead of such skepticism, trust me, it'll be good for you and everyone around you.***

It's pretty much the perfect ending to a rough week. My mower has been on its last leg for a while now but today...

This happened when I was getting ready to load up to do the free yards I cut for folks in need. If you are one of those, I'm sorry, but you need to try to make other arrangements until I can figure out how to afford to replace it. I'll reach out individually to you when I have time.

The mower has had an issue with the engine that makes it very difficult to start. The issue was with a compression assist module that is built into the engine that assists in starting. It went out and isn't financially feasible to fix. Today I noticed when trying to start, smoke started coming out of the battery compartment, I ran up to the garage to grab some tools to unhook the battery and by the time I came out of the garage this was what I saw.

What a week!

Still as always, even and especially when it's going rough

Hey folks I'm having mechanical issues with both my gas pressure washers. Pretty sure I can fix both of them for about $120. They are both a few years old so I am going to fix them but also want to buy a new one to take some of the work load off of these. Lowe's has a great sale on one right now that is usually about $369 but with my discount and Lowe's rewards money I have accumulated I can get it for only $277. I have a little over $100 in tool library money left from previous donations. If anyone could and would like to pitch in to help pay for the repairs and to cover the rest of the new one I would really appreciate the help. Total for all I need about $300.

If you would like to pitch in, I have all these for donations- I think all of them might say my name Shannon Hill on them:

Despite the fact that I have this beautiful sign someone gifted me a couple of years ago, and also despite the fact I have posted it again and again, I still have many folks who just show up wanting equipment. There is:

NO WALK-UP SERVICE AVAILABLE

All loans are:

BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

If it's your first time borrowing- appointments are available daily 365 days a year at EXACTLY 10am and 730pm- I am only available for a very short time at either of those times and you MUST HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO COME AT EITHER OF THOSE TIMES.

If you are a returning borrower- pickups are anytime after 10am or after 730pm depending on what we scheduled. If you want something anytime that day before 730pm you have to:

MAKE YOUR REQUEST BEFORE 10AM

I build all orders for the day around 10am and then leave for work and I'm not home again until 730pm. I keep the same schedule on weekends so I can still have a life outside of work and AATL :)

Thanks for passing this info along, it will save someone a trip and some headache.

These 3 guys are all AATL Heros! From left to right: Jeff Arrington, Eric Stone and Robert Prince. Today all 3 of them showed up around 10am this morning ready to work on my backlog of equipment that I desperately needed fixed. Including me, we were all strangers coming together to do something very special for the community. From around 10am to 430 they all worked constantly repairing equipment.

I had the easy job, diagnosing issues and prioritizing what was next to be fixed. Everyone of them, no matter what I placed in front of them, were up to the challenge. At the end of the day we had collectively repaired 9 weedeaters and 4 mowers and got two more mowers to the point they will run once I get parts for them. Just totally AMAZING!

I told them when I snapped their pic that I was going to make them famous. Please help me do that and thank them for their totally selfless work they did today for all of us in Ashland and the surrounding areas.

I now finally have a full fleet of weedeaters that will meet the demand I have for them and almost a full fleet of mowers. Just having these is great for everyone who needs to use them but you just don't know how much easier it makes it for me to be able to meet the demand when I have 14 weedeaters vs. the 4 or 5 I've had so far this year.

I said we were all strangers, however, interesting story about how I had first met Eric 2 or 3 years ago that he reminded me of today. I was in Gibbs Hardware before they sold out to Kenny Queen. I believe I was there buying a replacement lawnmower blade. I overheard this fellow talking to an employee needing a new cap for his weedeater gas tank. They didn't have what he needed and he hadn't been able to find it anywhere else. I told him if he wanted to follow me home I'd give him one. He had never heard of AATL so I could tell by the look on his face he was a bit skeptical of this stranger telling him to follow me home, lol. However, he did, I got him a gas cap off one of my parts weedeaters and it worked out great for him. He came today to return the favor. Just crazy how works.

Thank you guys so much, what you did today, I wouldn't have been able to do in weeks, you made my life much easier and untold amounts of people will benefit from your kindness today❤️❤️❤️

Most of you probably don't realize that I have an undergraduate degree in Philosophy. During all my studies, what I was realizing was, that try as they might, most philosophers failed in their attempts to explain ethics, God, existentialism, or pretty much anything else. Don't get me wrong, the logical exercise and deep thought put into their writings are interesting, insightful, thought provoking and in a lot of ways helped to shape me into who I am today. However, a couple of years into my studies, I was introduced to a book called Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein was a German philosopher who wrote in the early 1900's. This book of his really caught my attention because in it he wrote about the way I had been feeling. Modern pholosophers, while extremely brilliant and thought provoking, ultimately mostly failed in their endeavors to explain anything. In his Tractatus, Wittgenstein wrote brilliantly, that no matter how talented and intelligent one was, that some things are beyond the realm of logic, language or human understanding. He finished his thesis with a famous phrase among those who study philosophy, "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent". That has always stuck with me, it is so simple but also so profound. I don't necessarily agree with it in every case but on many occasions it really is better to bite your tongue than to give your thoughts on something you haven't the foggiest idea about.

Yesterday, I posted about 5 mowers being returned with mechanical issues in the past week. Someone commented if I have that many returned like that I should stop loaning them. What that person and many of you probably don't know is that mowers and weedeaters make up about 40% of all my loans yearly. I do my best to provide what people need the most and lawn equipment is at the very top of the list. I've made close to 1,000 mower and weedeater loans each of the last two years. Out of all of those loans, over 9 years, I've had 3 mowers returned to me that were unfixable due to damage by irresponsible users. Some of you may remember one of them that I banned from borrowing not because he destroyed the mower- people make mistakes - but because he blatantly lied to me about it and that was the feather that broke the camel's back. I wrote about it when it happened.

So when I say 5 mowers were returned with mechanical issues, none of them were the result of neglect or improper use by the borrowers. All of my mowers and most of my weedeaters are hand-me-downs that people donate to me after using them themselves for years. I have to work on them often to keep them going. The 5 returned had varying issues. One had vibrated the motor mount bolts lose, one had broken where the motor mounts to the frame, one had a wheel fall off where the frame wore out around the wheel, one had a pull cord that broke, and the other I haven't figured out yet, but the carburetor seems to have vibrated loose.

It was definitely an unlucky week for mowers. The pic I've included here is a really good example of the equipment that I battle with pretty much on a neverending basis. The mower is the engine off of its original frame that gave out and the frame is that which had another engine that gave out. They are Frankensteined together and have been working great for 3 years since I merged them. The weedeater was donated to me about 5 years ago, it came from a lawn service who had used it for years- I have to do a mini overhaul on it pretty much yearly to keep it going. The truth is, though it runs great, after 10 or 15 years of service where it has been used pretty much every nice day, it could give up the ghost at anytime to where it isn't cost effective to repair it anymore.

I haven't made this post to call out the one who commented on the other post saying that at all. I actually appreciate him for voicing it, because if that was his thought then there were probably many others thinking the same thing. I just didn't want people to think that most people who borrow from me mistreat the equipment when it's exactly opposite to that. They may bring it back without cleaning it up correctly but most folks are mindful that they are using equipment that our whole community share and depend on. If that weren't the case I wouldn't continue to put in all the work that it takes to continue to loan them.

Hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!

Folks I had 5 mowers returned in the last week with mechanical issues. I was already short on mowers so this has made it even worse. On top of that I already had a backlog of needed equipment repairs. I got 3 of the mowers repaired in the evenings this week. I still have 6 mowers, 10 weedeaters, 4 leaf blowers, a post hole auger, and a wood chipper that needs repaired.

Any of you who do small equipment repair, I could really use your help getting caught up. If you have a couple of hours to volunteer this weekend- Saturday or Sunday -I would greatly appreciate it.

I haven't diagnosed all the equipment yet but the repairs to the ones I have range from putting on new starter cables, to swapping out carbs, cleaning carbs and I suspect most of the ones I haven't diagnosed yet are probably carb related.

If you can help please message me to let me know which day and what time you will be able to come. Really appreciate any help you can give.

Lots of you had and are inquiring about tillers. Thanks to Ashley Green we did get the two larger tillers repaired. So I have 3 tillers available,:

a small 12" electric that's good for small areas of softer ground that need retilled.

a 5HP Craftsman 24" front tine

a 6.5HP Husqvarna 24" rear tine.

I ask for $20 per day to use the tillers.

The small one will fit in any vehicle. For either of the larger ones you need a vehicle like a truck, van, large SUV or vehicle with a tow trailer to haul and either ramps or some really strong folks to lift- they are very heavy- like riding lawnmower heavy.

To borrow need your address, phone number and when you want one to schedule an appointment for pickup.

First time borrower appointments are available daily at 10am or 730pm depending on whether morning or evening pickup is better for you. Equipment is always due back by 7pm. If you are a returning borrower you should know the drill.

To set an appointment, go to the Ashland Area Tool Library page, click on the message button to contact me. There is no phone number to call, all appointments are scheduled through messenger.
