We continue to receive complaints of dangerous activities by young people on e-bikes and electric motorcycles on the streets of Ashland. We will be taking enforcement action when hazardous traffic violations are observed, out of a concern for the safety of our young people.

We regularly receive reliable reports of stop sign and right-of-way violations, as well as dangerous speeds near and by pedestrians in the park and on sidewalks and streets.

Below are some links with more detailed information, but in short:
• A Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike has pedals and is to be treated just like a conventional bicycle.
• A Class 3 e-bike is more powerful and cannot legally be operated on a public roadway by anyone under the age of 16.
• All e-bikes must have a manufacturer’s label identifying their class and it is a violation to remove or tamper with the label.

Any powered conveyance, even those commonly known as “scooters” that are powered by a gas or electric motor and that do NOT have pedals are considered motor vehicles. They cannot legally be operated on public roadways by anyone that does not possess a valid driver’s license, and may not be legally operated on sidewalks or in city parks by anyone.

And of course, whether an e-bike, conventional bike, motorcycle, scooter, or Model T, it is always illegal to go the wrong way on a one-way street, or ignore traffic control devices such as stop signs.

We ask everyone to know and obey the law. APD would much prefer to arrest a juvenile for committing a traffic violation than respond to a crash involving injuries.

APD officers have responded to multiple calls for service today regarding subjects claiming to be Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and threatening legal action and jail time for supposedly missing “federal jury duty”.

THIS IS A SCAM.

If you receive a call similar to this, do not be alarmed. Do not give the caller any personal information. Don’t get scammed!

‼️POLICE IMPERSONATION SCAM ALERT‼️

The Ashland Police Department and law enforcement agencies across Mid-Missouri have noted a recent increase in police impersonation scams over the past few months. In the Ashland community alone, residents have already been scammed out of tens of thousands of dollars.

What is a Police Impersonation Scam?

A police impersonation scam occurs when someone pretends to be a police officer, deputy, or other official to scare or pressure you into sending money or sharing personal information. These scams often involve threats of arrest, warrants, fines, or missed court dates.

How to recognize a scam:
• The caller demands immediate payment (often by gift cards, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency)
• You’re told not to tell anyone
• The caller pressures you with fear or urgency
• Requests for personal or financial information
• Phone numbers or caller IDs that appear “spoofed”

What to do if this happens to you:
• Hang up. Do not engage.
• DO NOT send money or provide personal information.
• Verify the call by contacting your local law enforcement agency directly using a known phone number.
• Report the scam to your local police department and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Law enforcement agencies will never demand payment over the phone or threaten arrest without due process. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and check it out first. Stay informed and help keep our community safe

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On 03/27/2026 at approximately 1:54 pm, an Ashland Police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 600 block of E. Broadway in Ashland on a vehicle driven by a wanted individual. The driver, Emily Berry of Columbia, had two active Boone County failure-to-appear warrants and a suspended driver license.

After stopping, Berry answered to her name, but refused to identify herself. When she was advised she had a warrant for her arrest and told to exit the vehicle, Berry put her vehicle in gear and fled the stop.

The APD officer initiated a vehicle pursuit. Berry fled northbound on S US Highway 63, driving without regard to other motorists and reaching speeds of up to 105 miles per hour. Berry attempted to evade the pursuing officer by trying to take Discovery Parkway and Grindstone Parkway in Columbia, but was traveling too fast to safely navigate the exit ramps.

Just south of Stadium Boulevard on S US Highway 63, the vehicle was slowed by traffic and came to a stop. A felony traffic stop was conducted, and Berry was taken into custody without further incident.

Berry was charged with Aggravated Fleeing a Stop or Detention (D Felony), and Driving While Revoked/Suspended (D Misdemeanor). Additionally, she was arrested for the two outstanding Boone County warrants.

Thank you to the Boone County Sheriff's Office - MO, the Columbia Missouri Police Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol for their assistance in bringing this situation to a safe resolution.
