The Ashtabula Police Department extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues mourning the loss of Officer Joe Cooper.

Officer Cooper dedicated 38 years of service to the Geneva Police Department before continuing his law enforcement career with the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, where he most recently served as a School Resource Officer.

His years of service to the communities of Ashtabula County will be remembered and greatly appreciated. Our thoughts are with his family, the Sheriff’s Office, the Geneva Police Department, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Today, as Sgt. Ries is laid to rest, the Ashtabula Police Department joins law enforcement agencies and communities across Ohio in mourning his loss.

The Ashtabula Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow officers of Rittman Police Sergeant Scott Ries, who was killed in the line of duty on July 5 while responding to a call for service.

Although our communities are separated by roughly 90 miles, the law enforcement family knows no distance. Today, as Sergeant Ries is laid to rest, we stand alongside the Rittman Police Department and the entire Rittman community in honoring his courage, service, and ultimate sacrifice.

Please keep Sergeant Ries’ loved ones and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest easy, Sergeant Ries. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As you celebrate the holiday, please remember that the possession and discharge of fireworks are prohibited within the City of Ashtabula under City Ordinance Chapter 1519.

Our goal is to keep our neighborhoods safe, quiet, and enjoyable for everyone. If you observe illegal fireworks activity, please contact the Ashtabula Police Department at 440-992-7174.

⚠️ TRAFFIC SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️

Due to the ongoing power outages affecting portions of the city, some traffic signals may be non-functioning.

🚦 If you encounter an intersection where the traffic signal is dark or not working, Ohio law requires drivers to treat the intersection as an ALL-WAY STOP.

✅ Come to a complete stop.
✅ Yield to vehicles that arrived before you.
✅ Proceed only when it is safe to do so.

Please use extra caution, allow yourself additional travel time, and watch for emergency crews working to restore power.

It is with great sadness that the Ashtabula Police Department shares the passing of two members of our law enforcement family, retired Officer James Henry and retired Officer David Clemens.

Officer Henry dedicated 26 years of service to the citizens of Ashtabula, while Officer Clemens served our community for 31 years. Together, they devoted more than half a century to protecting others, answering calls for help, and serving with honor and commitment.

The impact of their service extends far beyond the years they wore the badge. Their contributions helped shape our department and our community, and their legacy will continue through the officers who follow in their footsteps.

We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside them. Please keep their loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Thank you, Officer James Henry and Officer David Clemens, for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice. Your watch has ended, but your legacy will never be forgotten.

As bicycle and e-bike use continues to grow throughout our community, the Ashtabula Police Department would like to remind riders of some important safety laws and tips.

Whether you're riding a traditional bicycle or an e-bike, understanding the rules of the road helps keep everyone safe. Riders should obey traffic laws (stop signs, traffic lights, and riding on the right-hand side of the roadway), use proper lighting after dark, and always operate their bicycles in a safe and responsible manner.

Take a moment to review the information below and familiarize yourself with Ohio law and local ordinances regarding bicycles and e-bikes.

Together, we can make our streets safer for motorists, bicyclists, e-bike riders, and pedestrians alike.
