Last week, we trained with firefighters and company officers from Aspen Fire, Roaring Fork Fire Rescue, Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District, Colorado River Fire Rescue, Grand Valley Fire Protection District, as well as partner agencies, who came together for a regional training consortium focused on multi-story and standpipe operations.

Led by retired Denver Fire Department Chief Dave McGrail, the training focused on standpipe systems, fire attack, water supply, hose deployment, and command considerations, building the skills and decision-making needed for some of the fire service’s most challenging environments.

Another step towards helping protect Colorado!

Our wildfire detection system is now fully operational across the Aspen Fire District ✅

Aspen already had one of the best wildfire camera networks in the region. It just couldn't see everything. Across the rugged, densely forested Lincoln Creek Valley, remote and hidden spots were too many for ground-based monitoring to fully cover.

Our satellites close that gap. Aspen now has continuous, satellite-based coverage across terrain that was once its hardest to monitor.

None of this happens without the right people behind it.
Fire Chief Jacob Andersen and the teams at Aspen Fire and Aspen Wildfire Foundation have been driving Aspen's wildfire strategy from the ground up. The project was also made possible by the Aspen Wildfire Foundation, thanks to the vision and generosity of retired paramedic firefighter George Newell, together with the Independence Pass Foundation.

Incident Update: Structure Fire, Twinning Flats Road Area

Last night at 9:36 p.m., Aspen Fire was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the area of Twinning Flats Road. Crews arrived to find fire on the exterior of the structure and brought it under control quickly, stopping it before it could extend into the walls and roof. Firefighters then spent time opening up the affected wall and eave to make sure no fire remained hidden in the building.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

Thank you to Roaring Fork Fire Rescue, Aspen Ambulance, and the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office for responding alongside us, and to the dispatchers and community members who got the call in fast. A quick report and a fast, coordinated response are what kept this from becoming a much larger fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Anoche a las 9:36 p.m., Aspen Fire recibió el aviso de un incendio estructural en el área de Twinning Flats Road. Al llegar, los bomberos encontraron fuego en el exterior de la estructura y lo controlaron rápidamente, deteniéndolo antes de que pudiera extenderse a las paredes y al techo. Después, los bomberos abrieron la pared y el alero afectados para asegurarse de que no quedara fuego oculto dentro del edificio.

No se reportaron lesiones entre los residentes ni los bomberos.

Agradecemos a Roaring Fork Fire Rescue, Aspen Ambulance y la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Pitkin por responder junto a nosotros, y a los despachadores y a los miembros de la comunidad que dieron aviso de inmediato. Un reporte oportuno y una respuesta rápida y coordinada fueron lo que evitó que este incendio se convirtiera en algo mucho más grande.

La causa del incendio permanece bajo investigación.

Kittle Fire Update - August 24th, 4pm

100% Contained!

Aug. 24, 2026. 4 p.m. – Firefighters called the 28.7-acre Kittle Fire southwest of Ruedi Reservoir 100 percent contained this afternoon.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire for the next several days.

Stage 2 fire restrictions remain in place across the White River National Forest, meaning no fires are allowed, even in developed campgrounds. Firefighters continue to address lightning-ignited fires across the fire unit daily, and any human-caused fires will pull resources away from that effort.

AFPD crews are on scene of the Kittle Fire, supporting the ongoing response alongside our local and federal partners.

The fire is currently estimated at 15 acres southwest of Ruedi Reservoir. Please avoid the area and give crews and aircraft room to work.

Aug. 19, 5:30 p.m. The Kittle Fire is now estimated to be 15 acres. Four heli-rappellers and four smokejumpers are on-scene in addition to the resources listed below. Pitkin County Government Roaring Fork Fire Rescue Aspen Fire

Aug. 19 4 p.m. Four single engine air tankers and a heavy helicopter are responding to the 10-acre Kittle Fire about 3.5 miles southwest of Ruedi Reservoir (near the Sloane Cutoff Trail). An air attack plane is coordinating the air response. Several engine crews are on the way.
